Re: Devilman Crybaby

I haven't seen it, but weren't people complaining that it was "what people thought anime is if they didn't watch anime" and has been rec'd as a "gateway anime"? Am I actually thinking about sword art online? Lol

I think some folks also complained about the animation, but I saw something recently from the same studio/team in the same style and I liked it. It was different (the animation style).

I don’t think that’s true at all of Devilman: Crybaby, nor do I think it’s the best gateway anime. It honestly feels more like an anime fan’s anime, not an anime for people who don’t really watch anime. Maybe some of the more off the wall moments can be described as "what people thought anime is if they didn't watch anime", but that doesn’t make it a gateway anime at all? So you might be thinking of Sword Art Online.

Also, I’ve never personally seen anyone complaining about the animation?? Masaaki Yuasa and Studio SARU are both beloved and well-respected by the anime community for their top-notch work in creative and inventive animation. Where have you seen any of this? Am I missing something?

AYRT

You know, I think across the board I was just confusing this anime with Sword Art Online (from the animation to the storyline etc.). The commentary was just bits that stuck out to me, I think probably on Reddit or something -- likely from people who are more into a certain style than newer stuff (for example, I'm not a big fan of Mecha anime, especially when a lot of the art is CG, I just really find it aesthetically displeasing).

Yup, it was sword art online. Thanks anon for indulging me!

That’s fair enough, it’s no worries.
