The gatekeeping old guards can be very obnoxious and unpleasant to deal with, but ime they are still less likely to do things like doxxing other fans, making death threats or stalking and harassing people from fandom to fandom.

The asshole kids (not all kids, but the entitled asshole ones) on the other hand, really do seem to think that anything they do or say to anyone should be okay, because they're just smol minors, and everyone around them should have their comfort, safety and preferences as their #1 concern at all times. And because they feel like they are in the moral right, they are entitled to demand that the adults cater to them, and when they don't, it's okay to accuse them of being pedophiles, racists, what have you, over trivial things like shipping and character preferences. They can hurl whatever slurs and insults they like at other fans, doxx them, make death threats, stalk and harass other fans, what have you.

Granted, this depends on what parts of fandom. 4-chan and gaming fandom have always been radioactive toxic hellpits, but they are also full of dudebros who think they own the universe. Slash fic writing fandom is where I hung out for the most part.
