108: I like her, but I totally understand where you're coming from. Those things bother the hell out of me too.

112: I understand being attracted to the performance...I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I also don't mind people being attracted to the character, I just think it's a bit weird.

119: I'm going to ignore this because you OBVIOUSLY haven't read the original novel or Susan Kay's Phantom. If you had, you might think a bit differently, because believe it or not...CHRISTINE LOVES ERIK!

122: Aww, I ♥ Billie Piper. Her music is so uplifting.

Um...I haven't read the book in a while (a few years, so my memory is kinda rusty) but I don't remember Christine actually, you know, loving Erik in a romantic sense. Pity? Sure.

Re: 108, 112, 119, 122

[identity profile] meaghan1345.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
there's actually a quote, when Raoul and her are on the rooftop under Apollo's Lyre where he asks her, "Do you love him?" and she hesitates and he says, "You do! You love him...and it is the love of the deepest kind, the kind you do not even admit to yourself"

So I kind of take it in that sense. Plus I put a lot of stock into Susan Kay's novel.

Re: 108, 112, 119, 122

[identity profile] milo1047.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Even so, I rather think Erik was a rather manipulative and abusive man. Kidnapping Christine and threatening to kill her fiance, murdering people who displeased him, extorting money from the owners of the opera house and so forth.

[identity profile] meaghan1345.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh by no means am I saying that it's a healthy relationship, it's not. It's just my ship, so I defend it.

Re: 108, 112, 119, 122

[identity profile] meaghan1345.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, as I said, I take Susan Kay's novel as practically my personal canon, so I see what's going on in Erik's psyche and understand it a lot more...that's just me though.

Re: 108, 112, 119, 122

(Anonymous) 2009-03-30 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I've not read Susan Kay, but I've read the Leroux's novel, and I think that Raoul is misinterpreting the confusion of Christine's feelings here. I think she's attracted to him, and what he represents but it's by no means so clear cut as love for Erik. I'm particularly suspicious of that line in which he takes it upon himself to tell her how she *really* feels, claiming to know better than she does herself.

Re: 108, 112, 119, 122

[identity profile] meaghan1345.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I definitely recommend reading Kay's novel. If you're a fan of Phantom it's a must, it's personally my favorite novel of all time, practically saved my life when I was going through some problems.

Re: 108, 112, 119, 122

[identity profile] nirejseki.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I tend to like the original's interpretation more than Kay's novel, but then again, it's not my ship. Have you read any of the comics? They're pretty cool. ^^

119

(Anonymous) 2009-03-30 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
No, she didn't love him. And no, you can't use a published fanfiction as your defense. Not saying that Kay's novel wasn't a fun read (which most of it was), but it's still just a glorified fanfic. It's not canon, and using it like it is makes you look ridiculous and doesn't help your case.

Re: 119

[identity profile] meaghan1345.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to say that most other phantom fans are going to disagree with you about Kay's work. You're open to your opinion, but you don't have to call me ridiculous. If you had read my other comments, you would see that I mentioned Kay's work because MANY people view it as alternate canon. I still love Leroux's book, but I love Kay's more because it saved my life. If that makes me look ridiculous, then so be it.

Re: 119

(Anonymous) 2009-03-30 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say that, at all. "Most" fans? Most fans that like Kay's novel and consider it a sort-of canon are fans of the musical more than the original novel. Which, I suppose makes sense, since Kay romanticized Erik as much as the musical itself did, if not moreso. So, Kay's Erik falls more along the lines of his musical version than his actual canon personality.

I'm not saying it wasn't a good book. I thought it was, except for some rather flaky parts here and there (But lots of books are like that). Still, the bottom line is, you may like it all you want, but you can't claim it canon. It is NOT canon. It will never BE canon. And you can't use a published fanfiction as a defense of a pairing you like. That is kinda silly. You can actually use true canon to argue on your own behalf. I know you can; I've read the book.

Re: 119

[identity profile] meaghan1345.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
And I did use the original book to defend my ship, go back and read the comment I made to another person about Raoul asking Christine if she loved him, her hesitating and Raoul saying, "You do love him, and it is a love of the deepest kind, the love you cannot even admit to yourself"

Leroux is MY canon, I love Leroux's work. Notice I also said, "ALTERNATE" canon. I didn't call it canon, I called it ALTERNATE canon. There is a big difference. I've been a Phantom fan since I was six years old when I first heard the musical. I read the original novel when I was 8 and I've been a fan of that since then. I'm 20 years old now, I've been a fan for almost all of my life.

[identity profile] nirejseki.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
119. It's not my ship (though I understand it! ^^), but I second your comment; the whole point of Phantom is that it's a creepy, unhealthy type of love going on there. If people want to write it in more simplistic fashions, they can; I don't see why OP is so bugged by it...

In my opinion, OP was just trolling. ^^

Re: 108, 112, 119, 122

[identity profile] meaghan1345.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
thank you for your comment. I understand where the OP is coming from, but I always thought of Christine's love for Erik as having more depth than her love for Raoul. Her love for Raoul was...IMO, simplistic and only stemmed from her having a crush on him when they were younger.

Re: 108, 112, 119, 122

[identity profile] nirejseki.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree entirely - in the book, it basically says flat out that they were playacting being at lovers, like children. They don't have the emotional maturity for a good relationship - and certainly not for an interesting relationship! Just given all things equal, Erik/Christine is much more interesting to think about even with the creepy factor. (I would ship Erik/Christine if I shipped anything, but I don't really see any pairing in it that I really love, so oh, well. ^^;)

Re: 108, 112, 119, 122

(Anonymous) 2009-03-31 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
For some one who clams they don't ship, you are all over the place in this post sounding defensive.

Re: 108, 112, 119, 122

[identity profile] nirejseki.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
That's because I got rather offended by the rude and elitist tone the OP used, which is a pet peeve of mine. One doesn't need to be a fan of something to get annoyed on its behalf, you know! I'm defensive on behalf of the silly fangirl I was ten years ago when I started shipping in general (not fandom, but still quite silly), not the pairing.*roll eyes* If anything, I ship Erik/any Communard, but that's because I'm a historian and would love to see someone trying to place Erik in his proper time setting...(Erik/Victor Hugo flirtation for the win!)

Besides, I always respond to a lot of posts whenever an interesting (or, as in this case, annoying) secret comes up.

In my opinion, OP was just trolling. ^^

or just, yanno, expressing their opinion.

unless expressing an opinion that makes you all butthurt = troll.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-31 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, I did read Leroux's novel. Erik was still fucked up and incapable of mature romantic love. And Christine still didn't love him.
