119. I don't understand why people want to get on a soapbox about liking "healthy" couples in fandom. Raoul was obviously a better match for her in the end--and I say that as someone who's loved the story since she was about nine years old, and loves Erik--but it IS okay to like a couple that is fucked up and dark and wrong.

And I say that as someone who has trouble shipping unhealthy couples, but that doesn't mean I don't see or understand that there is something to the Erik/Christines of various other fandoms. Love isn't always a walk in the rose garden.

True. On the other hand, you can't say that the saturation of stories that promote emotionally abusive relationships as something romantic to which women should aspire isn't a huge frickin' elephant in the room in the case of some ships. Particularly when they build up a fandom which really doesn't see how fucked up the relationship really is.

Here's the thing, though. Most of the time, the people that like those relationships have an idealized, almost "safe" version that they prefer that's merely gleaned from the source. Erik and Christine, as written in the books is dangerous and ultimately impossible because Erik is a nutjob. In fandom, people accept that and like the couple BECAUSE it's dark, or they change it to something more socially acceptable in their heads. That's why you get the "Erik the woobie who wouldn't actually hurt a fly", ect, ect.

You could say this is "making excuses for a nutjob", but really I think it's just that people are attracted to certain aspects of these fictional relationships (a guy that really REALLY likes you, for example) and would not so much find the other parts appealing (the part where he's going to blow up thousands of people if you don't agree to marry him). Therefore, I think the chances of them actually taking up with a nutjob because they really like Phantom of the Opera are fairly low, and if they do, it's probably because of other factors, like an emotionally/physically abusive childhood.

You mean we don't automatically go out and act like people in books? Somebody didn't tell the Twilight haters.

Do you think most viewers don't understand how fucked up this pairing is? Phantom fans seem sympathetic to me, not delusional. Frankly, I find the romance of Twilight and young girls' responses to it far more disconcerting than Phantom.

I've had the opposite experience with OL Phantom/Christine phans. All the RL P/C phans seems to understand that he's cracked in the head, while the OL ones think he's some poor delicate woobie.

Are the people you know in RL older or been fans longer? This whole thing has me thinking back at my experiences as a phan and I have to laugh. OP I was one of those phans. I was the batshit Erik/Christine shipping, Raoul should die in a fire, Erik is just misunderstood and just needs love fangirl. I grew up. I now ship both Erik/Christine and Raoul/Christine among other couples.

You want to know why there are more E/C's then R/C's? Cause Erik is interesting and Raoul is not. Now now I've learned to like Raoul and his failtastic attempts at heroics but he's boring. Nice, safe, boring men are good in reality, but not in fantasy. Erik may be an abusive psycho but he's also a genius, passionate, creative, talented, and has a nifty underground lair. Being whisked away by the dangerous, charming man who adores you is well a fairly common fantasy.

In conclusion we should all just run off with The Persian.
