119. I love that book and agree that the relationship is not romantic in the least - in the book. ALW's version deliberately added in a romantic element for people to enjoy, and Erik is deliberately made more "interesting" in the musical for that exact reason, but the book's creepiness comes through quite strong. Some people focus on the creepy, others - perhaps less mature others, but not in any way evil - focus on the romantic elements put in by ALW, choosing the musical portrayal and their POV over the book.

Still, in my opinion, why does it matter to other people if some people choose to focus on the romantic elements? OP seems to get really up in arms about the whole thing, and is rather rude when stating their point. They don't even seem to really like Phantom, so I'm not sure what the point is...*shrug*

(Besides, the romantics are going to get their day soon. Abusive!Raoul and happy-ending!Christine/Erik AND American setting - coming soon, to a theatre near you, courtesy of ALW. God I hate him sometimes. Most of the time. Bah.)

Personally, I'm pretending that movie is not happening. Sorry, ALW. I love you, because you gave me Sarah Brightman (and DAMN, do I love her), but I also hate for... a lot of other things. This movie being one of them.

And I don't think it's really "rude," per say, to state that you hate a pairing. I hate lots of pairings. I think that line was used more as a way of getting everyone's attention to read the TL;DR that followed, than it was to piss people off.

Also, it's clear that the OP is basing his/her opinion on the book, and not the musical, considering the quotes. So, I can see where the OP is coming from this.

I don't know. Maybe it's because I ran out of the fandom as fast as I could because of all the people who apparently didn't have the slightest clue what the hell they were talking about (Christine loves Erik? Raoul's abusive? WTH is this grand fuckery?). I mean, if you like Erik/Christine for the messed up relationship that it is, more power to you. Hell, one of my OTP's is truly messed up, and I wouldn't want them any other way. But don't try to convince me that it's romantic, or mutual. Because yeah, then I'll laugh.

It's not a movie...it'd be okay if it was a movie, because then we could ignore it and go along our merry way. No, the bastard is making it a musical. *cries*

It's not rude to hate a pairing, but OP rather implies that people who do ship it are just plain wrong. I get annoyed with any sort of elitism - I mean, why would it MATTER so much that people are getting it wrong? There will always be young writers in fandom, getting the whole thing wrong and writing happy little "he rescues her, reforms himself, and they get together!" fic - this is a fandom-wide phenomena, non-abusive characters becoming abusive and all. It still doesn't really give the right for OP to imply that anyone who does it - "phanbrats" - is just stupid and misguided and thinks abuse/stalking is cute. (Which people do, and that's a cultural problem, not something you should insult people about. Twilight's popularity has to be due to SOMETHING, after all, and it's not the writing...)

I thought those were musical quotes, which is why I made the assumption (indeed, I still think so - been a while since I've seen it/read it, but they sound a lot more like musical!characters, especially Raoul - he just didn't have that much character in the book...). A lot of the things the OP said related to the musical, not the book. There's a lot of critiques from book!POV that OP didn't use, too, thus my assumption.

I'm not in the fandom, I just know what most fandoms are like. And that Phantom is seen by a lot of pre-teens who promptly go and write fic for it. Everyone needs to start somewhere, after all.

Laugh at the OCC fic, don't get offended by it; that's my basic point. Because OOC fic happens everywhere, it's inevitable. Enjoy the good fic, ignore the bad, like everyone else. Don't troll about it. ^^; (not aimed at you, aimed at OP, if OP reads these)

Wait, wait, WAIT. I'll just focus on one part here. It's going to be a musical?!

OH FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WHY?!?

Tell me you're lying to me. Please? I swear, I'm flinching right now.

Re: 119, 148

[identity profile] nirejseki.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
*whimper* Yes, I KNOW! It's "coming to Broadway soon".

God I hate that man. I live in NYC, I don't want that playing next door!

I wish I were lying...

I mean, why would it MATTER so much that people are getting it wrong?
It's the same reason that many people are up in arms about the fact that Disney didn't have a black Princess, or about the anti-feminist "messages" that Disney allegedly sends. Art imitates life. Entertainment and people's reaction to entertainment are reflective of people themselves. It's frustrating and slightly frightening that so many people find the Phantom to be ever so romantic, because that tells me something about their RL values.

Besides which I was quibbling with my sister about this and while I have not the heart to yell at people to their faces, I can write very heatedly and passionately. I'm not very good at speaking >.> and I make up for it by expressing myself a bit too well in writing. It's opinion tinged with frustration at my lack of speaking ability, pretty much. Elitism was not intended, I assure you.

And I WAS commenting on the musical. I read the book a while ago and wasn't dreadfully impressed by it...though I don't think the novel presented Phantom&Christine's relationship any better.

And regarding "yell at", I'd like to point out that I have a very Italian/Irish family so loud arguments over stupid crap (leading to instant make-ups of course XD) are fairly commonplace.

Romantic!Phan here — though most emphatically not of the "she totally should have stayed with him at the end!" variety — and there is no sequel, no, stop talking nonsense! It's only romantic because it's a tragedy, because in the end he decided he loved her more than he lusted for her and let her go with the man she chose and who could actually make her happy. Giving it a "happy" ending ruins it.

Re: 119

[identity profile] nirejseki.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you entirely! Do. Not. Want. Sequel. But ALW is making one anyway, and it's going to come to Broadway, and it's going to suck. ;___;

(Do note, my comment about romantic fans being less mature is aimed at those who want a happy ending, not those who acknowledge the creepy and tragic elements as a necessary part of the story. The comment of "the romantics will have their day" is aimed at that same sub-element in the fandom, the super-romantics who change the whole source material just to get the happy ending...which, as you said, misses the point.)

Re: 119

[identity profile] ember-reignited.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. Yes. Them.

I... I don't understand how the creator can be one of them. How do you miss your own point?

Re: 119

[identity profile] nirejseki.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Them. Nothing else can really be said...

I know. >_< It's just...gah. No. It ends there, goddamnit, they don't come to New York and get together at the end, especially not at Coney Island, which is quite possibly the tackiest place possible. (My only question, as a history geek, is if they're going to include the part at the entrance of the park where you walk in and a vent is under your feet and it blew all the girls' skirts into the air. But probably not.)

My theory is that ALW went insane. Have you heard the song he wrote for Eurovision? "This is my time, my time, myyyyy tiiiiimmmmeee!" = entire song. It's horrible. Clearly the person who wrote Phantom was killed and a body-double replaced him.

not the op but...

OP seems to get really up in arms about the whole thing, and is rather rude when stating their point.

and you have been completely and wholly rational in your attempt to disprove the OPs point. yep. that's you. certainly not up in arms judging by all the comments you make throughout the post.

not at all.

They don't even seem to really like Phantom,

or maybe they don't like the version that you seem to not be so intent on defending. is the fandom now limited to what only YOU like and all other versions of the source material are crap?

or maybe, they are getting tired of seeing character bashing that goes on against another character (Raoul).

or maybe, you should take a chill pill. you're certainly not disproving that Phantom fans are NOT BATSHIT AS ALL HELL.
