119: Yeah I can see that being a troll secret. The first secret doesn't bother me cause it does make sense. I may love Erik/Christine but it's not healthy. The second just...I hope it's not serious, that would scare me.

146: Thank you!

162: I get the whys, but it still makes me sad. I still think the source material should be the focus of a fandom, not smut or for that matter even fic.

119. Well, yeah, Erik/Christine is unhealthy. I suspect that's why some people like it (not to mention the strong romantic element ALW threw in there, which is the reason the rest of the people like it! Come on, the source material of musical - though not book - deliberately tries to make Raoul uninteresting next to awesome!Phantom; you can't help but be swayed by it even if you know intellectually that it's unhealthy. That's why it's a kickass musical. ^____^ )

162. Yes, I understand your view, though I think fic needs to play a large part in fandom - the "alternative" endings, missing places, etc. come out and you sometimes get really awesome stories out of it. But if you forget the source, you kind of forget the point of the fandom...(with some exceptions, where the fandom has outclassed the actual source. It happens...)

[identity profile] masterfedora.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
While I can concede the importance of fanfic, I don't think it needs to play a huge part. One of the reasons I tend to be more into RL fandom then online fandom is because RL fandom doesn't focus on that sort of thing. Fanfic exists in RL in the form of fanzines and fanmovies and such, but the focus is still on the source. For instance I belong to the Star Trek fandom in RL. I get together with friends and we watch Star Trek and talk about things that happened in the episodes and characterization and have debates and all that. None of them, to my knowledge, write Trek fic.

Fandom shouldn't outclass the source, not saying it doesn't, I'm saying it shouldn't. The reason a person is a fan is because they're a fan of the source.

I acknowledge your point, though I still personally enjoy fic tremendously and think it should play an important role - it gives people a chance to share their imaginings on the source, giving other fans a whole new perspective on things they might not have considered before. One can achieve that with simple discussion, but usually not in such an eloquent way.

Besides, I desperately longed to join RL fandom groups when I was younger, but I lived nowhere near them and was incredibly shy. So instead I interacted with the source material alone, creating new scenarios, etc; only when I discovered online fandom did I share them. (also, I love sitting and watching things and making comments, but a lot of my friends live very far away from me and I can't share comments via IM/internet, so we discuss and fic to connect about thing)

Fandom sometimes does, and rightfully so. There are some really badly made fandoms that still attract people - not because of the source material, but because of the possibilities inherent in the source materials. The source itself is uninteresting, the fandom/fic potential is marvelous. It happens, and it's just as legitimate as other fandoms. Which are in turn as legitimate as, say, fandoms made for people's fic! ^^

I think I got burned out on fanfic because of the whole feedback thing. I don't have to give feedback to the source. I mean I can write letters to them if I want but I don't feel obligated to do so. Also sadly 99% of fanfic runs the gamut between "Oh my God this is terrible." to "Oh my God, what were they thinking this is terrible." Which goes back to the feedback thing. I can't tell people they suck. I want them to have fun. I want them to be able to write their terrible stories with OCs and absurd plotlines cause they're having fun.

Also I'll own up and say part of my reason for not wanting it to be the focus of my fandom life anyway, is that I don't really write fanfic anymore. I'm not here to be the support mechanism of other fans. I'm here to spend time with people who love the same things I do. Maybe it's a kind of bewildered bitterness but there's no place for me in fandom anymore.
