(Anonymous) 2009-03-31 01:42 am (UTC)(link)The other shows and characters are Lt/Cpt Kara "Starbuck" Thrace and President Laura Roslin from Battlestar Galactica; Commander Susan Ivanova and Satai/Entil'Zha/President (depending on when) Delenn from Babylon 5; Gabrielle and Xena from, well, Xena; Zoe Washburne from Firefly; Shirley Schmidt from Boston Legal; Max Guevara from Dark Angel; Aeryn you know; Major/Colonel Kira Nerys from Star Trek: DS9
They're all STRONG but they aren't all "hard-ass action types" either. I could go over one by one those who aren't soldiers or warriors, who don't fall into that category and those who sit partially in it. Several are stronger in will and personality, in getting done what they need done even outside of (and sometimes nothing to do with) battle. One is a lawyer and a couple are diplomats/politicians.
I think you're right though in that they're all very strong women and I tend not to go for the weaker ones so much however they may or may not show that trait. I do like some characters that are more girly though, Jadzia Dax comes to mind - strong but very much into being a woman and enjoying it. Someone else asked about Kaylee in Firefly who is very much a feminine character and I do like her, though she kind of gets on my nerves. Like Inara more and she is, well, DEFINATELY feminine and knows how to use it.
It isn't that I dislike great hoards of female characters, it's just that I like the ones who have character and a plot, a story of their own rather than being a plot device or a position that needs filling like X's wife. Some I don't like anyway, but that's true of developed male characters too.

It's just that feminine doesn't typically fall into the "hard-ass action type" slot all that well and usually implies different traits all together. Jadzia is pretty damned strong and one hell of a fighter if she wants to fight but.... if you've watched DS9 you'll know what I mean.
And Inara, to use my other example (she's pretty well known in some areas of fandom) isn't a fighter by any means, not sure how well she'd hold up in one if she didn't have an arrow on her, but she's strong in other ways. Uses her self confidence and her feminine nature towards that strength actually.
