120 OP

I like Gaius well enough, but I don't see how he's more sympathetic than Nimueh/less deserving to die. Nimueh stood against Uther's tyranny while Gaius stood by and facilitated Uther killing his fellow sorcerors. He's no better than she is, but I think the writers actually intended for us to think that good had prevailed and I don't think it's that simple.

...it really has nothing to do with her looks, though. LOL.

I'd have been fine if neither of them had died, but one of them obviously had to. And I think it would've been more satisfying dramatically and emotionally if he had instead.

It’d be most satisfying for me too,if none of them had died. But, as you said, one of them had to,to finish the series with a crucial end.
Regarding your saying that Gaius’s dead would have made a more dramatic and emotional ending. This is a personal effect. I felt relieved and content. It was dramatic and emotional enough for me. And has nothing to do with who should go/stay so we’d better leave our feelings on that before discussing.

Many characters in Merlin,I find, reside in the grey area;Uther,Morgana,Nimueh and/or,as you’ve pointed out,Gaius as well. It’d be unjust and presumptuous to put them in order which one deserved to die the most by judging their sins. But it does ameliorate the case to decide, if we’ve to choose, which one should stay considering their fairness. For even Staind’s Grey has 14 shades. lol

While Nimueh has a tolerable cause to kill people and take revenge (as her kins had been massacred), this doesn’t justify her wrongful deed nor make her the less villain.
One thing to lift her up from this dark gray level (and gaining my sympathy) was forgiving but sadly the writers had been only making her like a revenging machine to me.

Gaius,on the other hand,as you’ve rightly stated, had in a way, facilitated the king in killing people. I couldn’t detect any pleasure in Gaius’ part, I only did see that he & Merlin always made the best out of many unfortunate & reluctant situations, saving people lives. His life had been useful and profiting to many (not to mention our Merlin who needed his guidance in the future.)

I think you could draw conclusion whom I’d rather not having dead ; )

…Good for you! I’d love her back to shine her gorgeousness around though. LOL.

I’d better rest my case now as it’s approaching 1am.
PS. English is not my first language, so sorry if I’ve not made myself clear on any point.

Yeah, you're right in that it's just my opinion that Gaius' death would've been more satisfying. But in a narrative sense, Nimueh's death tied the story off very neatly, and I personally like things to be a bit messier, like life. For me, emotionally, Gaius choosing to give his life for Merlin as a way to make up for the past (and I do think this was his intention *tear*), would have been more dramatic.

And then there's Merlin, who basically couldn't deal with the consequences of his actions, got angry, and blew Nimueh up. She told him how the world works, she told him someone would have to die and that it wouldn't be him, and he just plain didn't listen. So when things happen just the way she said they would, he is shocked and angry and has a tantrum. But she didn't lie to him; it's her job to restore balance to the world and that's what she did. I feel he needed to learn a lesson from this, and I don't think he did because he got to have his cake and eat it too -- and it was clear that the writers thought we were supposed to think Nimueh's death was a just one. Hopefully this (Merlin's failure to think and accept the consequences) will be addressed next season, but I'd be lying if I said I actually believe it will.

I think Gaius is a good guy and I like him, but he's hypocritical in a very human way. Maybe helping Merlin makes him feel better about himself, and that's valid as well. I like that he's a grey character and I would've been sad if he'd died; still, I wonder what message it sends that Nimueh stands up against Uther and is killed for it while Gaius gets to live for helping him out.

Hee. Nimueh's hotness wasn't a factor in my decision, but I will appreciate that hotness if she comes back.
