i hardly think failing exams means blowing several thousand dollars. i had decent enough grades in the class where failing wouldn't have mattered, and if you look back at the secret i said "almost."
and how does quitting college go against the anti-slacker mindset? not really sure how those are opposites, because they sound similar to me.

You can totally slack off in college. No one is going to stop you. But then you flunk out. And if you flunk out, you don't have a degree -- but you still have your college loans. And if you had a scholarship and your GPA falls below a certain point, you can lose it, and then you'll have to pay thousands more to complete your education. In any case, flunking your exams means you'll have to take the class over again, which may mean adding another year of college on before getting your degree.

It costs money to fail in college. Lots of money. Even a state college is several thousand a year. Maybe the OP is having her parents pick up the bill, but it still comes down to the fact that she's not taking college seriously enough to be in it.

Go work for a few years, mature a little bit. Come back. That's what a lot of people who just aren't ready to make the transition from high school to collage do. It's a whole lot cheaper than futzing about on campus in a daze, getting no where towards your degree fast.

Go work for a few years, mature a little bit. Come back.

It's funny you say that, I took a year off before starting University (I was kinda forced to, I had to take care of a very ill relative and couldn't keep up with both) and I found later that it was much easier to focus on my studies than it would have been if I'd started right after high school. I can usually tell the difference between people that took a couple of years to do other things, they tend to be more serious about their studies. Not to say that it's the same situation for everyone, of course.

Yeah, I noticed the same thing, too. I wonder if it's the break from the routine of classwork that kind of wakes people out of the "school is normal" rut. When you go back after a break you really have a better understanding of what your choices are, and that college really isn't a given.

College really is what you make of it. You can grind through with a grade and but still not learn anything and not actually forward yourself towards a career if you aren't careful.
