I've only seen her in two projects, this and Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, which I hated, so that type of role might be coloring my opinion of her. It was particularly frustrating because both had their potential - I liked seeing the youthful, spirited disciple who is supposedly skilled in martial arts (not much on display in Ten Miles, but more evident in Novoland: PE) and I don't mind the romance with the hot shifu, because Mark Chao and William Chan, who could resist?

But it's like the same damn role. She starts off with some gumption, but maybe a little too much "Shifu! Shiiiiffuuuuu!" bleating in N:PE. They really played up the "17 year old young women acting like a 10 year old girl" thing here, and I did not enjoy it. I enjoyed the independent, more adult woman she became, but the journey was a little tiresome at times. Fang Haishi showed more backbone and grit than Bai Qian, though.

Yeah, it's almost like a Commedia dell'Arte role - the croaky-voiced, impulsive young tomboy.

And I think Yang Mi plays that character type with skill. It's just not a character type that I can watch for 50 episodes.

"because Mark Chao and William Chan, who could resist?"

I really liked William Chan in Age of Legends, incidentally. (If you're looking for recs.)

William Chan was smoking hot in The Mystic Nine, Lost Love in Times, Legend of Fragrance. I would not be able to resist him, either.

Honestly? I would have worked a lot better for me if they kept the child actress for all of her teenage year episodes. She was awesome!

But I've seen Yang Mi in Swords of Legends (super annoying) and in Legend of Fuyao (super awesome), and I grew to like her in NPE later.

DA

That's good to know. I might give the drama another try.
