Wes Anderson is interesting for me. Everyone I know always assumed/assumes I'm a huge Wes Anderson fan, but I've never actually really watched any of his films. I recall seeing trailers for "Rushmore" and I really wanted to watch it, but I just...never got around to watching it. And then IDK I really got into the whole "cinephile" thing because DVDs were so easy to get access to, and they came with commentaries and BTS extras, like, we were so well fed. There were a lot of great directors I really got into and Wes Anderson and his movies just never popped out above the other directors and other movies. A few years ago I watched "Moonrise Kingdom" and while I found it an enjoyable film...I don't know. Meh? I also watched "The Royal Tenenbaums" recently and...it's good but...eh? Like, I don't know. His films are good and I understand the appreciation for the aesthetics and cinematography but...I don't know. Sofia Coppola gets me more. Edgar Wright's more fun. They both have better music. I wouldn't say I don't like Wes Anderson, but I just don't feel a need to get into his films.

LMAO I need to reevaluate Tim Burton movies. I grew up watching a lot of his films, but as the years have gone by I think I need to re-evaluate if his films have aged well/if I still have the same tastes/thoughts on his films. I recall watching "Beetlejuice" a few years ago and feeling underwhelmed, but I was only half watching it on Halloween. His best films are the ones that are directed by Henry Selick

Why did people assume you were a huge Wes Anderson fan if you never really got around to watching his stuff, and presumably never talked about him, if you don’t mind me asking?

And I agree that I prefer Edgar Wright and Sofia Coppola to Anderson as far as directors go.

I never directly asked people why they assumed I was an Anderson fan now that I think about it. I just recall when I'd talk to people about films many would ask me right away what my favorite Wes Anderson film is and I'd say, "Oh I haven't seen any of his movies." And be met with, "What?! You haven't seen [Anderson film]? Really?" Maybe because I'm a big Sofia Coppola fan and many find them similar? I know Wes Anderson films are described as "twee" and perhaps I gave off a petchulant snobby vibe that reminded them of Wes Anderson characters? And FTR, I am not as sharply dressed as any Wes Anderson character, nowhere near so I don't think it's the way I look.

That’s a very strange assumption on their part, because you’re not doing anything to indicate you’re a Wes Anderson fan. Some people are just weird when other people bring up movies in general I guess. This isn’t really the same situation as yours I’ve had people jump to conclusions when I say I like Jean Cocteau’s movies and poetry, and I feel like I always let them down when I tell them I’m not someone who’s good at getting deeper symbolism in a lot of things, I just like his aesthetic. So again, your situation is different, but some people seem to assume things based on directors you like. Even if the directors you like have nothing to do with Wes Anderson.

Jean Cocteau is really specific and not necessarily someone who gets name dropped regularly these days, not like someone like Alfred Hitchcock who is easy to identify. I wonder what it is about you that people jump to the assumption that you're into Jean Cocteau. XD It's wild how people draw weird assumptions on others' tastes because I don't really know where the Wes Anderson thing comes from either.
