I'd say there's something damned wrong with a person if they can't connect to characters based on the character's gender.

Unless they don't identify with their given gender? I guess?

I agree with this

...There was something wrong with me when I was fourteen then?;; :(

I don't know. I'm sort of iffy as to whether connection is the right word, but for some reason I just never used to get as attached to female characters as I did male. Then one day I was thinking (embarrassingly enough, about Naruto het pairings;;) and was like 'oh lol, they would work' And I just started clicking with them/started shipping het/femslash from then on.

It's not because I ever felt a dislike for my gender. Or prioritized men above women. Or didn't want 'competition' from another girl, or any of the other reasons people usually list when it comes to this sort of situation. I just didn't. Really, simple as that.

/lol weirdo.

I sometimes have trouble relating to female characters, possibly because I'm rather tom-boyish and find it easier to hang with guys and what not. *shrug* Doesn't mean I don't like the female characters, just means I find it easier to identify with male characters.

THIS. There has rarely been a case where I found myself relating to a female character who wasn't some type of tomboy like myself, or at least seemed to have some type of boy-ish characteristic/trait/personality/whatever that I myself have. So, "girly-girls" usually don't interest me. And because of that, I tend to just relate to male characters a little more.

Then again, I have a huge issue with the whole "character gender" preference. What exactly does that have to do with anything? To me, their personality is what matters, not what's between their legs. :/

Honestly, it all just comes down to preference. I myself enjoy a little of everything, so it's hard for me to speak up for the OP or who their secret is intended for, but I really don't think one should even begin to deeply analyze why exactly someone would like a certain pairing preference or slash genre over another. That's just what the other person likes. If they can learn to enjoy the other side of the spectrum, then good for them. If not, hey, there's no problem with that. If you like apples, but aren't a fan or oranges, you don't have to eat the oranges. Stick with your apples. It's not the end of the world. The only problem is when people start to develop the whole mindset where they go, "Oh, you don't like oranges, but I do, so you're causing this huge negative view of the rest of us who do like oranges." Needs less bitching and more simple enjoyment of what you like.

Worst metaphor ever. ;;;;

This. The only problem is that modern media tends to have the characters' personalities determined too much by their gender. But, really, it's all about personality (like...I love Rory Gilmore while I want to kick Logan Huntzberger in the crotch...)
