101. If you're playing JRPGs for the gameplay, then you aren't a stereotypical Girl Gamer.

Really, i'd take one who only plays FF over ones who act like Lara Croft or Samus or something is some huge power symbol. They're some huge something symbol alright

Hey now. Samus is great. Metroid is a great game, she hardly ever removes her armor (at least not until the graphics caught up with her figure :\), and she kicks considerable ass in Super Smash Bros.

Lara Croft, though, is indeed a crappy Indiana Jones-with-boobs! cash-in with none of Indy's compelling gameplay. Even my husband, the biggest perv/gamer in the world, says Lara Croft games suck.

101. Agreed on the awesome that is Aran. It's really only recently that Ninty's been pushing the whole sex symbol thing - it's always been there since the NES, but some of the more recent stuff is... pushing it. But then again, it's still a heck of a lot better about it than a bunch of other games.

I've heard mutterings that it's Nintendo trying to appeal more to the Japanese market, since Metroid isn't too popular there. Would explain the brain-scarring trip into Uncanny Valley that is 3D Z-Suit, at least.

Phew. I get the 'JRPG's aren't real games!' line a lot in some forums, which makes me wonder if I'm doing it wrong or reading too far into the 'stupid movies with button pressing' I play. The main factor that motivates me to pick up any JRPG is the gameplay, although a good story and compelling characters help too. (And then sometimes there's titles like the older Dragon Quests where the gameplay is antiquated and the story is cliched, but I love them to death anyway for the 'old school' factor.) I'm more of a strategy RPG buff myself, but I refuse to be ashamed for looking forward to the next Star Ocean or Final Fantasy title.
