117. I agree to an extent. I mean, porn is porn, and people are turned on by different things -- no shame in that at all. A lot of fandom is made up of straight women, and a lot of straight women aren't going to be turned on by girl bits; I totally get that. But while a lot of fic is/involves porn, not EVERY fic does. There's fluff and angst and action/adventure with romance on the side...

So when I see someone list a whole bunch of pairings, het and slash, canon and non-canon and crack, and there is not a single femslash pairing among them... it upsets me, a little. I vastly prefer femslash, and that's most of what I read, but there are usually at least a couple of het and slash pairings I find cute/fascinating/hilariously awesome. I'D TOTALLY READ JEAN ARMSTRONG/TIGRE JUST THROWING THAT OUT THERE. So I wonder.

I do think I've found some explanation though: attraction. If I find a character attractive, I pay more attention to them. I notice the nuances in their actions and speech; I think about their motivations more, because I like thinking about them. So, simply by virtue of being attractive, they become more interesting characters in my eyes because I've devoted time to fleshing them out in my mind. And because I find them interesting, I want to read about them. Just something I've been thinking about.

I think that's a pretty common motivator in what we like and don't like in what we read/write in fanfic. I'll admit without any guilt or shame: I generally only read, and I certainly only write, about characters I'm attracted to on *some* level (and that's generally a combination of physical appearance + personality + talent). Otherwise I'm just not interested unless it's a story by an author I particularly enjoy, from other works. I don't read fanfic (gen, het, or slash) just to read fanfic; I read it because I have a strong interest in these particular characters and want to explore more about them.

I've written/read gen/het/slash/femmeslash, all depending on the fandom and characters and relationships, though I will admit my predominant interest is in m/m slash. Those just tend to be the relationships and characters that interest me the most, and it may be that in my predominant field of interest (classic rock RPS), there really aren't that many female "characters" that capture my fancy and I don't care for "original female character" hetfics, so I'd rather just read about the male rockers I'm most specifically interested--and attracted personally--to.

This is what I was trying to get at. We don't all write fic for porn or to turn ourselves on. I write femslash because I love female characters and the way they interact with each other, and I don't understand how you could never see female characters you like and want to explore their characterizations, and yes, see the potential for a relationship between to women just like you could two men. Especially if you're a woman yourself. I get something not being your kink sexually or not being attracted to women, I think fandom helps to marginalize women in a lot of ways.

You do realize you sound like you're accusing those of us who do enjoy male/male slash because we find it personally arousing as helping marginalize women, right?
