140. Now I really intensely want to read this. As a gen fic or an OT3 fic?

151. Calm down! You're right, it's inevitable that people will jump on the reinvigorated boat just because of the pretty faces. We can only hope the new fans find something deeper--if the movie provides that--or that they choose to do some homework and watch past shows. In any case, the fans you're worried about won't hang around for long... even if the movie is a gigantic success, six months from now it'll be the tried and true fans that remain.

Oh, but what do you mean, we don't need pretty faces? Star Trek is filled with pretty faces! I'll grant you, not all are as traditionally attractive as the people on, say, Gossip Girl but they were still very hot. Nimoy and Shatner were damn fine back in the day and no way would I kick Kelly out of bed. Pretty is what initially drives a lot of people to shows and movies but you have to have hope that the heart of Trek isn't lost in all the epic CGI space battles.

I love you in a way that is not at all platonic! :D Thank you!

You just know that back in the day, thousands of girls across the country were swooning over those guys. It's just that beauty standards change.

And hey, if we get more people into the fandom, that means we'll get more of every kind of fan. We're not just going to get the people who are in it for the pretty, but we'll also get the people who care about, how you say it, the "heart" of Trek.

Very true! Although I had to admit, I still find most of the people on TOS incredibly hot even by modern standards :)

You're right! Paramount's really pushing this towards people who wouldn't be inclined to see it just because it's got the title "Star Trek." I'm hoping it'll pay off--and if it does, we're going to have people from even more varied walks of life than the fandom's had in years. The secret-poster has a point... Quinto and Pine will bring in a lot of shallow fans with their pretty looks (though by no means should we be equating that with their performances; I can't wait to see what they bring to the characters). It's inevitable but like you said, that's only going to be a portion of the new fan base that will arise with the new movie. Thank you for helping me put that in perspective!

OH LORD YOUR ICON 8D

Agreeddd.

I don't get why people are so shocked and offended when the marketing keeps suggesting that you "forget everything you know!" and all that. It's clear as day that Star Trek doesn't necessarily have a good reputation in the eyes of the general public. They have to show pretty people and explosions in the trailers, cause that's what attracts audiences. But just cause that's what they're using to bring in people, doesn't mean it speaks for the entire film.

Seriously though, I just want an active lj-based Star Trek TOS fandom. If it means I have to deal with some crazy Spock fangirls for a few months, SO BE IT.

The general public are deeply stupid and deeply annoying. Maybe it's just me but I'm a-okay with them staying the fuck away from Star Trek. We do just fine without them.

What, and "geeks" are somehow a superior subculture, and everyone who likes something nerdy is automatically a great deal more intelligent or mature? As if. You'll often find sophisticated people and morons in the same group, whether if it's at some nerdy convention or at a football game. I could say that fandom in general is deeply stupid and annoying, and it wouldn't be any less true than your comment about the "general public."

The negative image of Star Trek has come out of the fact that it does have obnoxious and embarrassing people in it's fandom. There's no walking around that fact.

On the whole, everyone could use some of Star Trek's general message, of a positive future, co-operation, acceptance and all that. With a show that revolves around that kind of concept, to think of the fandom as some elitist group is contradictory and absurd :\

I think it's interesting that you've assumed that I self identify as a geek and that I exclude "geeks" from the concept of general public. Allow me to be less elitist and more misanthropic; I think people, generally speaking, are tools. Pretty much across the board. I don't like people. I like individuals, but people or the general public as a group tends to be stupid and obnoxious and did I mention stupid?

I am the last person to argue that geeks are the "homo superior", believe you me. Your subculture, regardless of what it is, has very little baring on your ability to be a moron. I'm using you in the general here and not in the specific, you seem like you're probably an intelligent person.

Also? You don't have to boldrage at me.

If your view towards people in general is so negative, then I can hardly see the difference in letting something become more accessible will make. People will continue being "stupid" in general, but chances are you'll just meet some "individuals" who you'll view as being worth your time.

Of course, your own view of the world is hardly something that can be argued about, especially if I wanted to refrain from making assumptions about your character.

Actually, I more or less put that in bold in case you figured my reply to be tl;dr, so you'd at least see my main point.
