Maybe your friends have enough sense when getting into a new fandom, to be civil with the existing fans and look around a while before running off at the mouth about what's wrong with the old shows and how the new ones are OMG SO MUCH BETTER THAN WHAT YOU OLD 'TARDS THOUGHT?

(Sorry, I can see the reason for the OP's worry. I have both "old skool" and "new skool" fans on my f-list for more than one rehashed series/movie. I too have been the new kid in a very old fandom before, and while some of the "oldies" are old farts who won't listen to reason by anyone who hasn't watched for 30 years, most like new ideas but simply don't want their squee harshed; they really don't seem to hate the "newbies" so much as the attitude a small but loud percentage of them bring along. If that makes sense.)

:( Well, that attitude sucks.

And no, I don't think anyone I know personally is like that. If anything, I feel that the Classic fans whine a lot more about the show being ruined, not the same, etc. I know some people really don't like the Classic Who stuff, but I also got the impression that they feel like they're made out to be Bad Fans for that.

It could be my corner, though. I wouldn't be surprised if there were people bashing the old show elsewhere.


But honestly, Trek? Gosh, I can't imagine any new thing really denting that fandom. From an outside perspective.

I understand, the oldies are sometimes the assholes and try to keep the new ideas out. Hell, I could probably be mistook that way from my earlier comment on this page (I think it's just a few above this one), if someone doesn't read through and see that what I'm railing against is a deference to the new fans (or if I didn't make that clear in my rantyness) - not against acceptance or mutual respect itself.

And yeah, Trek fandom is HUGE. I've often thought it's so big that it's like the newest major religion (except I'd probably get eviscerated for making the comparison, so I've resisted up 'til now *G*).
