It's not so much knowing what others in fandom like and think just so you can agree, it's more understanding the text and the history so you have some comprehension of it and a willingness to learn the finer points as time goes on rather than getting all buthurt.
Doctor Who is a great example in this, the fandom is slightly older than Trek but close enough and it's had a strong following for decades with waves of new fans coming in through that. But at a trickle. Then along came New Who and...
The lesson is, the new fans who insist on watching and reading only that, who don't bother to look at the older stuff and respect the knowledge and opinions of those who HAVE been around since before Russel T Davies came along are the ones that are looked down on. Disliked and written off or worse if they act too idiotic. Those like me who make an effort to go back and learn and read at least some of the older stuff? Who listen to the elders (as it were) do fine, and don't even like the first group much. Sure there are disagreements between the two groups but as time goes on that boundry is fuzzing and becoming less of a thing.
What I hope is that something similar will go in with Trek and this new movie, that the idiots who don't even bother with the older stuff will be small in number if annoying - but most will go back and look and pay attention. And respect those already in the fandom.
That said, despite growing up a Trekker I never really found the fandom online, doesn't seem to organised with spots here and spots there but no thriving hubs of activity - maybe this will help with that?
