Not fanfic, but I once made a fan video set to a Bach cantata.

People tend to be a bit better at doing fan vids with classical music, but Bach's a great choice!

Is there a lot of classical music with lyrics (I guess outside of opera) or are we just putting "Bum BUUUUM BA DA BUUUUUUM biddle buddle woo~" in between the writings?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-13 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, opera fic would rule, that's a great idea

(Anonymous) 2022-04-13 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to see this in my fics. Imagine doing that with Tchaikovsky's overture 1812, the ove with my cannons at the end. Epic.

I'm imaging a section titles with just "Cannons" and cracking up.

It'd be pretty cool if people could embed the actual music or the sheet music though

I hadn't thought there were. And the thing about songfics, is that they're usually based on a popular piece (usually from the 20th/21st C) with lyrics the average person is aware of. It doesn't work, otherwise,if it can be said to work at all. *shrug*

(Anonymous) 2022-04-13 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, the best songfics aren't with popular songs. I think those songfics tend to be the worst for that exact reason.

I'm the above anon

There's definitely classical music with lyrics that isn't opera, they're called oratorios. They tend to be religious (because operas couldn't be performed during lent as ~sinful spectacles~ so they made do with these), but there are secular ones. Handel's Messiah is probably the one people know best.

But I think you can get away with movement and intramovement titles for non-lyrical pieces, as well as tempo titles. Also, opera song fic sounds amazing!

Fucking love this, secret poster

(Anonymous) 2022-04-13 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)

This sounds interesting, but how do you write fic to classical music? I was imagining more of a comic until that last line which seems to imply short story writing rather than visual interpretation.

Yeah, song fic is written. The basics of song fic, imo, is that you are attaching writing to the emotions of the music you're using. It's easier with lyrics, because then your audience doesn't have to listen to the song, but it's really about matching song feels to fic feels. I read some amazing classical song fic when I first starting reading fic and I've never gotten over how good they were.

I actually attempted something like this a few years ago, when I was deep into the Classicaloid fandom.

classical music to fan videos sound like it could be potentially bad ass. Might try and do a dive on youtube to see if there's any good ones to find.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-13 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe I just chose the wrong places, but my experience with classical music fans has not been good. The level of pretentiousness and snobbery is just too much for me.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-13 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
SA Sorry pressed entertain enter too soon.

I don't want to see that attitude getting a grip in other fandoms.

I agree so much! And it would also make for cute character detail and themes for one of the characters to play a classical instrument. It might say a lot about their character through the symbolism that instrument often carries in fiction. Same with what kind of songs/symphonies/composers they like best.

Not to mention the romantic aspects of them serenading their love interest with classical music! Or even better in my opinion, their love interest either already plays another instrument that complements the other’s, or they take up playing a complementary instrument as a way to bond and get closer together! I love when that’s done in fiction, and I wish it happened more in fic! There’s few things more romantic to me!
