I already get annoyed by people needing validation for their ships from other fans, but wow. That's a level of insecurity I can't relate to.

But "lets make it happen" is just a way of acknowledging it'll never happen but we can still have fun with it, surely? Or has that changed since I was last active in fandom? Which was about ten years ago, to be fair.

I don't think OP is talking about people who are just having fun with it. I think they're talking about fans who are deadset on influencing canon (or at least believe they can do so) by getting enough support for their ship from the rest of fandom. With that, they would have a valid argument to push on the creators, who might feel pressured to do what fans want (of course, it does not mean the creators will actually do this).

That's my interpretation though. I might be wrong on that.

DA I think it's either this, or they're deadset on making their ship the juggernaut and aggressively pestering everyone else in the fandom about that. There were some people in my fandom who stanned a less popular character who were constantly butting into every discussion about the fandom (including discussions of pairings that did not contain their fave) to stan for their fave, and it got old fast.

OP here and oh no - if anything I miss people who were just having fun with it. Some of my fondest memories of being in fandoms like Naruto in the 2000s was hanging out with the slash/femslash groups creating shitposts about how a manga panel could be interpreted as practically canon for a pairing just by being in the same room.

The ones I'm complaining about have access to social media that can potentially reach creators of media - so they get this idea to either bug irl folks til demands are met, or go off on a brainrot to antagonize fandom spaces by saying things like 'if you don't ship this you're homophobic!' (and yes there has always been THAT shipper who takes it way too far - but I swear in recent years there's been double the amount who act like shipping is a form of activism instead of just an internet hobby).

I'd say there's way more than double the amount of fans who act like shipping is a form of activism, because they know that accusing people of being pedos, racists, homophobes, misogynists, etc. is an effective way to run opposing shippers out of fandom spaces and professionals off social media platforms in today's online social climate.

The people having fun with it are often different from the ‘let’s make it happen’ lot. I’ve personally seen it in a few fandoms where the people shipping something genuinely seem to think that if it gets popular enough, or they spam the creators on social media enough about the ship it will be made canon.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people who don’t seem to be in fandom for the fun of it, but to ‘win’ or be ‘right’ about their fictional preferences. Saying that people can do fandom how they wish, but I can only think that doing fandom that way will just make you miserable. But hey I’m not gonna tell people what to do.
