I don't go here... uh, could someone explain the in-world origin of the name? It sounds like an interesting story!

It's about Leigh Bardugo's Shadow and Bone YA fantasy series (also a Netflix adaptation) which is slightly Russian-flavored, but doesn't really use proper Russian words. (I'm guessing on the last part, it's something I've heard people say.) In it, magic is a talent that pops up at random and magic wielders are called grishas. They're usually whisked away to a special school as kids and trained in their various fields of sorcery to blah blah blah magic fight good vs. evil blah blah blah.

I think it's a case where the author added the justification later (and she made several missteps for her Russian analogue fantasy setting) - they're called Grisha (Greg) after a Saint now.

More like it's a fantasy setting based loosely on Russia, but people nitpicked because it wasn't literally real historical Russia with a different name and magic, so now all the ways it's different have to be "justified."
