I read fics when I commute, too!
I usually do that on my Kindle, though, not on my phone. I don't actually care much about reading adult fics in public because I read them in English and I've always lived in a non-English country where English literacy is pretty low. (and even if they do understand that I'm reading porn I don't really care)
Sometimes I read fics in Japanese, too. Mostly on my phone with the pixiv app. So look out for people like that, too. :D
When I was younger and I had no smartphone nor Kindle, I used my Nintendo DS to read fics that I saved on .txt files. It's incredible how convinient reading fics in public has become!

I don't notice other people's phone because I don't care about other people in general, but I guess there are tons of people like us commuting around!

I read so much fanfic when I'm on the bus or even just waiting for the bus.

I have the day off and was reading (not smutty) fic on my laptop at my desk with my back to my living room while somebody was here working on my bathroom, and whenever they passed through the room behind me, I idly wondered if they could tell I was on AO3 from the font/format.

What? Who cares?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-18 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I do not believe that there is substantially anyone who cares about people reading fic (smutty or otherwise) on commute.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-18 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess it depends on what you mean by "substantially". There is, without a doubt, people who'd care enough to mock OP for reading fanfic of any kind because this is the real world and assholes exist. But whether or not OP or anyone else should care what those people think is another issue.

as long as fellow commuters aren't making an interactive spectacle out of themselves with their entertainment choices, I don't really care what they're reading, watching, or playing.

* playing a game with a controller dock for phone: cool, man, glad you have those headphones in, it's a long ride
* giggling over something on the phone: fine, whatever, glad you're having fun
* 3-4 finance bros having a moderately loud discussion over whatever they're hyping this week: pipe down, you're not the only people on this bus
* having a loud breakup over the phone: uncomfortable, some conversations gotta happen but would it kill both of you to do it more quietly
* standing up on an hour long express and tying the seatbelts/anchor hooks meant for heavy mobility devices into knots: please don't make me late for work because the driver has to call for assistance and ask you to leave the bus at the first stop, not cool
* being loudly *-ist: diaf, you absolute slimy garbage disposal

Quiet smut reading doesn't even register.

One time I did see a kid on obvious tumblr, and quietly told them that I liked their shoelaces as they were getting off the bus.

OP cares, I guess?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-18 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
...I can't imagine caring about any of this. I don't mean this in an unkind way, it just genuinely never crossed my mind to consider some stranger's opinion of what I'm doing on my phone nor to have an opinion of what they're doing on theirs (unless it's something annoying like watching youtube at full volume).

(Anonymous) 2022-04-18 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Or watching porn.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-19 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
For real. I'm constantly playing games on my phone on public transportation (volume turned down, of course, because I'm not an asshole) and I have never had a single person care.

I would be so embarrassed if anyone realised I was reading even gen fanfic in public. Yet I wouldn't give two hoots about anybody else reading even smutty fic in public. No idea why.

Maybe you were shamed by your parents/siblings/classmates about your hobbies when you were growing up? I know I have. I still have a lot of problems enjoying my nerdish hobbies outside my home because of that.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-19 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
*shrugs* I read smut fic at work. We only live once, best enjoy the time while we have it.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-19 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, when I have a ranting customer I can’t hang up on I read fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-19 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I think I would feel a little bump of good will if I noticed someone reading fanfic on public transit. I know I've caught a glimpse of a person's screen and seen they were listening to an artist I like, before, and that always makes me smile.

I don't care if people know I'm reading fic, but I would be slightly embarrassed if they knew I was reading smut. The only reason I'd be embarrassed, though, is because they might think I was sitting there getting super aroused--when personally I wouldn't read smut in public if I was likely to get physically turned on by it.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-19 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Same to all of this.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-19 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I read fanfic in public places all the time. Whether I’m killing time on a commute like you do, or I get a notification that a new chapter of my current fave fic has come out, and I have to read it now. It’s a common thing for me.

I don’t usually care, but I must admit I was a bit flustered one time when one of the fics was very smutty and had some “problematic” elements, and I was reading it in a restaurant while waiting for my food. I absolutely had to read it then, because I was too invested. But I was in a seat where waitstaff and people going to the bathroom could read my phone over my shoulder if they wanted to. It was kind of awkward for me, even if nobody was likely paying attention to me or what was on my phone.

Before I started working from home, I did this. I would download whichever fic I was reading and put it on my tablet. 20 minutes by bus to get downtown, 40 minutes to get back, reading on my breaks at work. I never minded the commute.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-19 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I write fanfic on my commute.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-19 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, I actually have a quite mortifying ‘accident’ about this. So, I read fics in public everywhere, too, and I was casually reading one in an elevator back in college when a classmate called me out on it: “Are you reading AO3?”

I was absolutely embarrassed at the time (and probably now too, had I been called out today!), but she just laughed and asked what fandom I had been reading. Later found out we have some mutual fandoms.

(Also, we’re still in contact today, years later, as casual fandom friends and sometimes artist alley table mates!)

Thank you Secret Maker!

Nailed the image too!

And thanks for everyone's responses! Sometimes I write fic on my commute as well, and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one!

Re: why would anyone care? /Etc. Etc.? Different people have different things that embarrass them I'd say! It's different if I'm bringing it up and want to share that "I do this thing" vs being "caught". Idk. I just tend to keep my fandom side private more or less. I know it doesn't matter if some stranger sees what I'm reading (and sometimes it's a bit fucked up too); but I'm also a bit wary if some man catches a wiff of say a non con piece that I'm reading and takes that as an invitation. That's obviously the extreme in someone catching you reading. Random person's judgement is far less important if at all. Anyway, thank you all for the thread! Fun read!
