I agree 100%. When I look back on her as an adult, she reads exactly the way a 15-year-old should to me. She doesn't always have the best judgment but she's trying her best in a situation that is really way more than she should ever have had to deal with at that age (especially on top of her existing family issues), and frankly, I think she matured admirably over the course of the series.

Nah, the girl was dumber than a bag of hair.

I’ve always loved Miaka and I still have a little chibi Miaka keychain on my key ring. I read Fushigi Yugi in my teens and really liked her because she seemed like such an ordinary girl dealing with extraordinary circumstances. I didn’t learn until way later that a lot of people didn’t like her and it was honestly such a shock to me.

I agree she gets better as the series goes on, though I still really wish Genbu Kaiden could get an anime, Takiko is such an improvement on Miaka in every way. I think the biggest issue with original FY is that Miaka, Tamahome and their romance is just so much less interesting than everything else going on around them while also being constantly in focus.

I think some of the dislike for teenage characters acting cringy is... feeling reminded of our own cringy years. Identifying with a character in a way that doesn't make us feel proud, so the dislike feels stronger.

I think so too, tbh, but ironically that just makes me like teenage characters more? I look at them and go "yep I sure was that dumb at that age, this tracks" and so to me I feel a sort of kinship because I absolutely remember being that cringy as a kid. Now that I'm older I can look back and laugh at it!

Oh yeah - I try to be affectionate to Past Me. But I think I understand where the antipathy comes from.

I actually really like Miaka, and have from the start! I seem to have always had a higher tolerance for characters like her, idk why.

I only watched about half of Fushigi Yugi, but I still remember the part where she was worried about the consequences of fighting back against a street harasser until she remembered she was way too far from home for anything she did to go on her permanent record. That was hilarious and definitely how I'd think if I somehow got stuck in another country in the past. Most anime girls think nothing about punching guys who harass them right away and that's just not realistic, in an annoying, almost "men writing women" feel (even though women write it too).
