I dunno. Lulu was always too fanservice-y for me to think of her as a really strong woman -- she seemed geared to appeal to the goth-kid fantasy, and little more. But there are plenty of strong women in Final Fantasy. Celes and Ashe (from VI and XII, respectively) immediately leap to mind. I know FF is a little weak on strong women, but seriously. You just have to know where to look.

One character from one game shouldn't ruin you on female characters as a whole. There are plenty strong, independent women, even in video games.

Don't forget Aeris and Agrias.

Garnet spends a lot of the game learning to be strong, I'd say she comes out that way even if she doesn't start off.

Agrias is barely a character. Hell, everyone but Ramza in FFT is barely a character.

Excuse you, Delita is a fierce-ass bitch and quite the character himself.

I was talking about the characters you're able to control.

In aesthetic, maybe; on examination I felt that Lulu had one of the more complex personalities of the game.

Well, Lulu -- like everyone in FFX -- struggled with internal conflict: the conflict between her duties as a guardian and her sisterly interest in Yuna's wellbeing (not to mention her guilt over her previous failed guardianships); the conflict between her feelings for Chappu and Wakka, and the way she saw Wakka relate to Tidus; the conflict between her sceptical nature and her desire to believe that Spira could be saved from Sin. Unlike Tidus or Wakka or even Yuna she didn't tend to soliloquise on these internal conflicts, but they were made clear by her actions and dialogue within the game. Lulu was quite a passive character in one sense, in that her innermost thoughts were revealed more often than not by the insights she made about other characters.

I think her passivity is what left me feeling pretty indifferent to her. She never seems to offset it with anything. Either way, I didn't come away with any particular impression of her because I foudn her really hard to grasp.
