HOWEVER, I personally don't like reading slash fic that cuts and pastes stereotyped female behaviour onto one or both of the men involved. I think it is insulting to both genders as it suggests that women act a certain way and that straight men wouldn't act in certain way.

This is exactly what bugs me about that secret. Not to mention it sometimes implies a weird, borderline misogynistic aversion to female sexuality in which women's bodies and women having sex are too yucky to write or think about, so the writer projects themselves onto an overly feminized male.

Disclaimer: I totally recognize that the aforementioned is NOT always the case, and that there are some female-body people who identify as male, or FTM transexuals who identify as male, and it would make perfect sense for these male-identified people to project onto male characters. I don't think this is the same as heaping stereotypically feminine traits onto a male character for the sake of wish fulfillment, though.

I totally get where you're coming from. Obviously I recognise that sexuality and how one identifies in terms of gender is very complicated and there's a big range of possibilites BUT in general terms there's just something about overly feminised m/m that just rubs me the wrong way. And I think it probably is that it implies something about female sexuality. Perhaps its unintentional but it still sucks.

Then in more basic terms there's the fact that a lot of the time the male characters being written about simply would not start acting like a teenage girl just because they're in love.

Right there with ya. Especially since people who identify as male probably wouldn't be inclined to projected stereotypically feminine traits onto male characters. Further ickiness is how the "feminized" male is always the hysterical, passive, super-submissive "bottom", too. Like that's an even remotely realistic/accurate picture of female sexuality.

Er... Where does the secret say that?

To me, the secret says that it's okay to write and read slash that is not realistic. Nothing more nothing less.
