130. I wonder if men wrote about women and did whatever they wanted, no matter how ridiculous or offensive, and then said "GUESS WHAT, IT'S NOT ABOUT REAL WOMEN" no one would care.

Okay, seen your comments saying that you were referring to mainstream fandom, but I honestly think that this is missing the point all around. Because personally, I don't see a problem with unrealistic, male-authored fantasy. Maybe I'm biased because I'm a guy myself and some of that appeals to me, but we all have unrealistic fantasies.

But there's so much of it. The male-authored stuff, I mean. The problem, to me, isn't that it exists. The problem is that it frequently drowns out female voices in other places. Slash fandom is an oasis of female voices; so why not let it be?

The problem isn't fantasy in itself. If you want to read about, I don't know, two men or women having kinky sex on the planet Mercury, unless you're in a fandom where that happens, it's not entirely realistic, but no one's going to care. People, in my experience, have a problem when it's either a) something that's plain stupid and could be fixed with a little knowledge, or b) feeding on stereotypes.

But there's so much of it. The male-authored stuff, I mean. The problem, to me, isn't that it exists. The problem is that it frequently drowns out female voices in other places. Slash fandom is an oasis of female voices; so why not let it be?

I see no problem with slash fandom being a female space, but it doesn't get to do whatever it wants, no matter what, just because it's one of the few female spaces.

Well, what is it doing? I genuinely can't think of any slash trope, regardless of how little I might personally like it, that I'd actually be willing to tell people not to write.

If this came down to an increased fandom dialogue about what tropes are unrealistic, well, that's nothing I'd object to. More discussion! And people writing more of whatever they feel would challenge common tropes they object to, great. If a view is lacking, put it out there. If there's something people want to see more of, let it be written.

It's when it's, "not all gay relationships have a top and a bottom, you shouldn't write that," or similar, then I have a problem. And it very, very frequently comes down to that.

That's because you haven't been invited to be part of the Sooper Sekrit Free Slash Fanfic Approval Committee. ;-)
