Okay, so. Do you feel the same way about Itachi who really actively planned his own death? Or maybe Haku, who threw himself on Kakashi's chidori knowing he'd die? Hinata's not the only one to put herself in direct danger to protect someone she cared about. This sort of thing is kind of a theme.
Not uh...any of the OPs
But I sort of do. Noble, and brave, but... :/ (I have so many issues with Itachi and Haku dying didn't fill me with anything either). I wish so hard Kishi would take the time to address the sacrifice/suicide after this battle at some point during the reconstruction or while she's recovering, and I want it to be Sakura. She's done this several times (Sasuke going Oro-seal nuts, Gaara fight, and running straight at Naruto post fox-sploding), and if anyone could understand Hinata's desperation to stop Pein from killing Naruto in that instant no matter how foolish, it would be her. And by talking about it, Hinata could experience more character development, like Sakura did when she picked herself up: she couldn't wait for Sasuke to save her and she could not be passive, Naruto could save people and again Sasuke wasn't perfect, and then that Naruto needs someone by his side to check him and be ready to deal with the things that happen in the aftermath (she didn't freak out this time, she steeled herself and there's this 15/16 year old apprentice ordering ANBU et al around). I want Hinata to not feel alone in that desperate moment, because when she's healing what she did will probably sink in and hit her hard (it was PEIN, way stronger than Sasuke, Gaara, and almost Naruto), and she'll need that, even more because when they were 12/13 Sakura had the blessing of not fully comprehending death, pain, and disillusionment, and WAR they're facing now. Hinata will need comfort, and she'll need to be held. I don't want it to be Naruto because she'll already probably feel uncomfortable, and that poor boy has about a million PTS issues to work out himself after the fight with Nagato (and probably Konan). I am NOT saying I want Hinata to regret her decision, she did it out of pure passion and admirable determination; she gave one of the most precious gifts to buy Naruto time -- life -- but I don't want this to be called 'noble' and then swept under the rug either.

That being said, I don't think she'll regret it. I don't think she'll need to be held and comforted. This is a shounen manga, so her making a choice to step in and try to fight was her character development. Even if she lost, the fact that she did something active was a step forward for her character.
And I realize you have an issue with the theme, and that's cool. We all have are peeves when it comes to plot and storytelling, but I have to say, I don't think it's ever going to get addressed. At least not in a way that you'll find satisfactory. Because it's not really supposed to be seen as suicide. It's heroic sacrifice. It is a popular trope in Japanese storytelling, and is, as I understand it, generally considered to be noble in Japanese culture. And it's a Japanese manga aimed at Japanese boys. So, I don't think Kishimoto is going to try to subvert that trope. Usually his characters learn and grow by putting themselves in danger and dealing with it or dying. The only way it might get addressed is through Kishimoto addressing how messed up the ninja system is in the first place. If it weren't for the system these people wouldn't be forced to make these kinds of choices. However, I don't think the choices themselves are supposed to be seen as negative.

I don't want her to, and I don't think she will either. I hate it when people do big things and because they're secondary characters we hear ZERO from them after it's over. :/ Ex: Naruto never checked up on Hinata or Neji -- Neji's Team probably did more to help him with his issues after he made steps to peace with his past.
What Hinata did WAS brave, you're right! I just don't want that to be the only focus (like, now Naruto's life span has been shortened AGAIN (but... wayyy better than him being dead/in Pein's grasp)), I want Kishi to spend time with her and show us she realizes what she did: -her- seeing HOW it shows how far she's come (which for me would be confusing bits of scary and private wonder and a few happy/proud/bittersweet tears). I just felt like Sakura or someone there would help her realize 'dude... I was infinite(wallflower reference lololol) and hold her head high with all her cuts and stuff. I want her to say/think something conveying she knows now she can die for love and/or for a cause, and she can be the one to help lead the clan to a new era.

I totally agree with you in that it's probably a cultural thing -- seppuku makes me nauseated with fear just thinking about it (COMPLETELY O/T I know). I think I'm also projecting how I want to hug Hinata after all the rabid fandom hate, too. Maybe that's why I come across scatter-brained; I don't want her to be *coddled*, she IS a damn ninja after all, and yes, you're right, her stepping in was character development, but I... AGH. I want all the Naruto kids to have a time out from this war crap and be hugged and made apple pie. Or Kingdom Hearts rip off popsicles. :|

LIKE I DON'T KNOW, letting ninja in training sort out their identity and puberty issues BEFORE having them fight to the death and/or murder each other? ;) And counseling. THERAPY SHOULD BE REQUIRED. And it'd be amusing to see.
