Boulivard of Broken Dreams (and Wake Me Up When September Ends) leads me to say "emo" right off the bat, but American Idiot makes it less so. I'll go with pop-rock, if anything. In order to say "pop-punk" I'd like to believe the music has to have some punkish elements, other than occasionally calling Bush an idiot.

I'll admit that there are some GD songs that I like. And by "some" I mean I've heard "one" that I find is catchy and enjoy listening to (of course, I don't go out of my way to find Green Day songs). I'm not quite sure how I got Warning [the song, not the full album] on my computer, but I'm rather fond of it. I still wouldn't come close to calling it punk though.

Wait, when did ballads become "emo"?

When they included lyrics such as "I walk a lonely road" and "My shadow's the only one that walks beside me."

Crap, you mean my country records are now all emo?

Johnny Cash does wear an awful lot of black...

I was just about to say "I should've added 'when coupled with whiney adolescent sounding voices" but then I realized that most country's pretty whiney as well.

Damn. I was gonna chip in with a trendy "not like they write their own music anyway" comment and was pwned by wikipedia.

Yes, because a band's entire output can be judged by whichever of their singles arbitrarily receive airplay. Not like it reflects more upon the current state of pop culture and commercial radio or anything like that.

I think that if a band caters to current pop-culture and commercial radio, it says a lot about the band itself, and their status as a "punk rock" band. And I'm not one of those punks that's like "bah, if a band gets radio play, it's no longer punk!" because I enjoy The Clash, and Against Me doesn't appear to have changed their sound to have gotten on the radio).

Eh, it's not necessarily catering - everyone hits the zeitgeist sooner or later.

I don't think it's even so much hitting the zeitgeist with Green Day and other bands that are classified as punk like All Time Low or Fall Out Boy or whatever. Punk is probably the music genre that changes the most out of any other genre since it's so very current events driven. There's just something about those kinds of bands that will forever have me refusing to call them punk.

Much like I struggle to consider Nu Metal a form of metal. I think it has more basis linking it to metal than the current uber-popular pop-"punk" has linking it to punk, but they're just not at all what the music is supposed to be. It's like calling Avril Lavine punk.

By the way, is there more than one of you anonymouses right now?

Well, it sounds like you're only familiar with American Idiot. It's hard to define a band by just one album, especially a band like Green Day. The punk elements are shifted about for AI, but if you were familiar with albums like Dookie and Nimrod, then you might see that the punk is still there.

You definitely sound like you would be more fond of their earlier work. Now, I would never try to force a band on someone (trust me, it's been done to me), but I think you possibly could change your stance on the punk issue. Just a little somethin' to think about.

Okay, Anti-Flag's old stuff, I love. I think they've sold out hardcore in their past ... three or four albums? though, and now can't stand them. I can still listen to and enjoy their old music, but I don't think there's much of anything that make me go "Yeah, they're still punk even if they have completely sold out." So it might not change my stance on the current band being punk, but it might with their earlier stuff. If that makes any sense?

Hmm. Now this brings up a different point. See, I don't think Green Day "sold out." Now, I admit that AI was my first taste of Green Day. And there is a change in sound between the old and new stuff, most definitely. But selling out has to do with WHY they changed. I think that Green Day matured from their Dookie days. I think they're all in their thirties now, and AI was a way of exploring their sound and seeing how far they could go, so to speak. I think it was also a way of expressing their opinions about the Bush administration. But I don't think it was to sell CDs. After all, Green Day was very popular before AI to begin with; they didn't have to change. It was for themselves and for the sake of music.

Yeah, I think you would like the old stuff. Dookie is good, and Kerplunk too. AI is an acquired taste; a lot of Green Day fans won't listen to it because it's too different from their original, snarl-y punkness.
