That's an issue of characterization, not "how one gender acts"

HINT: What you think is "gender-specific" behavior probably isn't.

I didn't say anything about gender and I thought it was fairly OBVIOUS that I was talking about characterization?

Hint: When did I mention gender specific behavior? And how are you going to dictate to me when you clearly don't understand the point I was trying to make about people applying Japanese manga and anime ideologies to western produced media in their fan-fiction?

Basically, some female writers (who have probably never even met a gay man before) decide that two characters from some western fandom are gay. They proceed to stereotype them based on what they've seen on Will & Grace or in Japanese manga and anime, thus defeating the purpose of characterization in the process.

And I'm fairly certain that [livejournal.com profile] thechameleonnn is correct in his analysis based on the fact that 'the effeminate gay male' is a stereotype dating far back in history. However, that's not my point because I was talking about the idea of the 'seme' and the 'uke.'

Hint: Where did I say that good characterization wasn't an issue?

Let me be blunt, since being coy doesn't seem to have helped. Yes, you can portray Draco incorrectly, but I take issue with the idea that the behaviors OOC-Draco is engaging in are "girly". None of the things [livejournal.com profile] thechameleonnn mentioned are "girly" behaviors. None of them are BAD behaviors. They can be OOC behaviors depending on the character, but they are not "bad" or "girly" or whatever negative attribute you want to attach to them in and of themselves.

I think you're still missing the point about what I'm trying to say.

Basically, even though some writers are characterizing incorrectly, they're still applying stereotypical attributes found in manga and anime.

In fact, turning a character into what a stereotypical "uke" is counts as being both out of character AND a generalization of male homosexuality. I guess that's kind of common sense though.

Also, there's nothing wrong with an effeminate or "uke" type of gay male. I really don't think that's the point [livejournal.com profile] thechameleonnn is trying to make. The point is that these characters are OOC because they're being made into "ukes".
