I'm not a legend elitist, far from it but you can tell from my screen name I'm a Arthurian fan. It's just that they chucked the legend out the window and watched it burn that upsets me :(

~Folkloric variation~! Saying that there's really any set legend to go by is kinda silly. :3 It's been growing and changing since it started, and I doubt that it's going to stop any time soon. As silly as it is, I don't think that any one version is any more legitimate (in that respect, at least).

If you don't like it, that's cool, don't get me wrong. :3 Just my favorite part of legends and stories are the way they change based on who's telling them.

I like a bit of variation in my legends, believe me. It does add to it, no one is more right than the other as they were passed down in spoken word and all... but generally speaking all the big things are still there...

It's just in the BBC's Merlin there were too many big things that were vastly different to the other legends. The main one being Uther raising Arthur. Now, don't get me wrong, I haven't seen all that much of Merlin (I did try, I just really couldn't) but this means that they're going to have to cut out the sword in the stone bit. The most famous bit of it. (Maybe they found away around it... I don't know)

I understand that Merlin's meant to be good old fashioned cheesy fun Like Doctor Who... and if you like it in that way, than fair enough. I just have a feeling that some people won't know that it's different and would want to learn something about it. There are theories in the UK that Arthur did really exsist and people do treat it as history, and even so the legend is part of our history. (Obviously not the magic bit... well... maybe a little!)

If you're in to Arthurian legends and stuff, I really reccommend (If you haven't seen it already) The Channel Four's Merlin made back in the 90s. It's really rather brilliant. Got Helena Bonham Carter and Miranda richardson and Martin Short in it. :)

In Geoffrey of Monmouth's writings, there is no sword in the stone. :P (That's kind of a later French thing.) Considering that he's a side character in the show, I guess they're kind of going off of his stuff (...sorta), considering that his was the first written account. In his stuff, Arthur's sword wasn't even called Excalibur yet--and Uther raised Arthur, to some extent.

As I said, Arthurian legend has grown and changed a lot. It's really, really impossible to just put your foot down and say that it needs any aspect, really. I think the only big thing is Arthur. :3
