I start watching favorite movies and spinning ideas on how the plot would change if instead of the canon protagonist the character I'm thinking of (sometimes an older character I've created or a blank MC archetype I create on the fly) is now the lead character. How does it effect relationships, plotlines, etc.

Usually it acts like a nice soft reset to my brain to start thinking up new ideas or spins off into new directions to create something wholesale that I can start working on.
