I think it's likely to be a case of the majority of players being pretty chill, so you're more likely to encounter them in-game. Whereas on social media, the toxic people can make themselves louder and more visible (not to mention they're more likely to be spending more time yelling at people on Twitter than enjoying the game, because bullying people is more fun for them) so they seem like a larger part of the fandom than they are.

Yeah, even though I've seen screenshots of people being assholes in-game as well, it won't do anything for them because nobody except the person they're playing with sees their antics. And as always, the toxic assholes in fandom on social media are not anywhere near the majority but damn, they're loud and unpleasant.
