What did he say about Adele and Taylor Swift?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-29 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
About Adele, he said “The thing is, she’s very insecure. And she doesn’t need to be, she’s still so young”. He also said her album 25 was going to be “very middle of the road.” This, after they had a song-writing session together and according to Adele: “I was asking his opinion about my fears, about coming back with a child involved — because he has a child — and then he calls me insecure?” She said it was a “don’t meet your idols” situation.

About Taylor Swift:

Interviewer: She may not be to your taste, but Taylor Swift is an excellent songwriter.
Albarn: She doesn’t write her own songs.
Interviewer: Of course she does. Co-writes some of them.
Albarn: That doesn’t count. I know what co-writing is. Co-writing is very different to writing.

The thing about both of these quotes is that they are dismissive of both these women as artists. They are professionally and artistically dismissive and judgmental, as well as being, in Adele’s case, condescending about a piece of her personality. And for me that’s just a lot more damning, despite being a lot more noncommittal on the surface. If he’d just said he didn’t like them as people, it would be kind of a dickish thing to share in an interview IMO, but at the end of the day, you don’t have to like everybody. But casually belittling and dismissing someone’s artistic merit in a public interview, and undermining the degree to which their professional success belongs to them (evidently based purely on prejudicial assumption, because it sure isn’t based on fact) is just not cool. *shrug*

Being called insecure is not a criticism. Also, how do you know that's not how she came across? Giving his honest opinion about 25, what is he supposed to lie just because she's famous? As for TS co-writing, yes that is a very different thing to solely writing and often is used in the industry when somebody has done nothing more than change one word in a song somebody else has written .

I just see a guy giving his honest opinion, not belittling anyone.

I fail to see how someone can give an honest opinion on something he clearly knows absolutely nothing about.
Taylor Swift has written plenty of songs entirely on her own (an entire album's worth even) and has co-written the rest of them. She is pretty much the worst example you could pick to critise the kind of co-writing you're talking about.

Being a fan is definitely clouding your judgement here, those comments were so incredibly mild.

For real. What makes it doubly hilarious is that in the next breathe he said Billie Eilish is great. And she is great! But she also cowrites all her songs with her brother. Lol!

But see, in her case it counts. She actually deserves artistic credit for her life's work. She's not like other girls. She's edgy and real.

I don't know how anyone can listen to a man dismiss sixteen years and apprx 200 songs worth of wildly successful, critically praised artistic output, without having lifted a single finger to check whether his presumptions has any merit whatsoever, and call it fucking "mild" or "no big deal."

Fuck that. Just call her a cunt or a dumb bitch; it would be less toxic.

And the Adele stuff is just-- what the fuck?

"Woman is insecure and her work is mid," says man in public statement.

Sure, 'cause why would someone be insecure when their industry idol says such sweet things about them? It's inexplicable. Women, amiright?
