I thought the consensus among real, serious cinemaphiles is that BoaN is a groundbreaking film that's also responsible for the resurrection of the Ku Klux Klan.

It used to be thought that, but that viewpoint fell out of favor about twenty years back due to the racism and because most of the claims about it just are not true. Here is a short myth-buster on it: https://moviessilently.com/2015/09/07/silent-movie-myth-the-birth-of-a-nation-was-the-first-feature-and-the-first-film-shown-at-the-white-house/

It got that unearned status of groundbreaking much the same way the Daughters of the Confederacy got the Noble Lost Cause myth embedded in American culture. Racism and repetition of the assertion in defiance of the facts until people just started repeating it without checking. Always check.

I accept that this article demonstrates that Birth Of A Nation was (a) not the first feature film (b) was not the first film shown at the White House (c) was not the first blockbuster. But I feel like your argument is sliding through the facts a little bit quickly, because it seems like Birth Of A Nation could still be a technically important and innovative film even if it was not the first film shown at the White House. It feels like you're kinda leaving part of the argument out. Proving that Birth Of A Nation was actually the second film shown at the White House and was not the first financially successful film does not prove it wasn't historically important.

It was also not as technically innovative as people claim, apparently. Like other filmmakers did intercut sequences first.

I guess they want what Gone with the Wind has

No. Look at it as a film not as a political statement. It is both. Some people think you can filter one out.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-06 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
You really can’t filter out the racism of the movie, it’s baked in. Besides, no matter if it invented or helped establish some filmmaking techniques, you can still find hundreds of films that do them better. That’s why film schools are phasing Birth of a Nation out.

And racism isn’t a “political statement”. There is political elements to white nationalism/white supremacy, and political sides that are racist whether they acknowledge it or not. But this film and the KKK are racist in the way that’s most true to the definition of the word, and racism is prejudice based on hatred and willful ignorance, not politics. It’s a “every rectangle is a square, not every square is a rectangle” situation, in that just because some racism is politically motivated, it doesn’t mean all racism is, or that every racist who thinks black people are lesser than white people has been influenced by political stances into feeling this way. Some people are just hateful bigots.

What are your thoughts on the BoaN that came out a few years ago?

Honest question.

Not seen it, so can't give an opinion on it.
