I had On Beyond Zebra as a kid and I also cannot figure out for the life of me what was in that book that I probably read several hundred times that was problematic. Granted, I was a kid, but that means I probably absorbed it without thinking and I kind of want to know what I missed. (Kind of like I've talked about here before when I read the Little House books and only years later realized Pa was in a blackface minstrel show. o_o)

ah yes the blackface show...I remember being deeply, deeply confused by that because when I was a wee un (I think I was like...6? when I first encountered that scene) I had zero frame of reference for it and nothing about it made any darn sense to me

I seriously thought that "darkie" was some sort of regional/period term for some sort of ghost, since someone in their act was rattling bones. Clearly they were painted black to resemble some variety of ghost/evil spirit! It was a spooky act!

Years later, I heard the term again in different context and things kinda came together...
