......that seems extremely silly. And nobody sees the email address but the AO3 servers, so...who cares? I don't see why people get into such tizzies over stuff like this.

eh. AO3 is all volunteer and there’s no telling what rando may have access to the info you offer up to the server. Flamewars are the least of the fandom dangers these days, I wouldn’t want some psycho deciding my fic was problematic or they didn’t like me ten years ago in a shared fandom and doxxing me. AO3 doesn’t have one scrap of real info about me for that very reason.

Uh, wow. Nothing remotely like that has ever happened on AO3 because of a volunteer. WTH. There's cautious and then there's paranoid.

Not on AO3 specifically but it’s absolutely happened in fandom and AO3 doesn’t vet their volunteers. I’m one of the countless that got harassed by those two crazy Teen Wolf tag wranglers almost ten years ago and even though it was happening on the site AO3 was super slow to address it. I think it was like three weeks? It’s really not outside the realm of possibility that someone with access to personal information decides to misuse it for targeting purposes.

I'm sorry that happened. That sucks.
I don't actually know anything about that incident.

I still don't think that providing a random email and made-up name to AO3 to comment anon is something that would be considered risky.
