Anon from a few posts ago again - I don't think I necessarily disagree with you, I think the argument that you're making is completely legitimate as far as it goes, there are a lot of arguments where the fact that JKR is alive is germane.

I just don't think it's germane to this specific argument, IE, that Harry Potter fans are more likely to be transphobic and hence are untrustworthy. I don't think whether or not the author is alive is relevant there. The argument being made there is not about the danger that JKR poses - it is about the beliefs, attitudes and behavior of people who are fans of Harry Potter and what kind of assumptions can reasonably be made about them. Those assumptions are not more or less legitimate depending on whether or not the creator of the work in question is alive. and honestly, I'm pretty sure that there are people who like Lovecraft specifically because they are racist, so.
