This doesn’t make any sense. A female protagonist being reduced to mere love interest would usually be bad for slash fans who wanted their ship to be canon, because now she’s you know, a Female Love Interest. To one of the male leads who the slash ship most likely includes. And this female love interest could and probably will get ~in the way~. I know you were having a laugh, but it really seems like you didn’t think your comment through.

Also, again I know it’s tongue in cheek, but it’s still not really all that funny to openly laugh at someone decrying that a female protagonist with potential to be a strongly written character has had that potential squandered to be just another love interest without much else to her character. All because you’re a slash fan. This isn’t the 2000s where female character bashing was at it’s hight, and people would frequently kill off or make a female lead or love interest OOC in fanfic just to get them out of the way so the dudes could bang. Because it’s not just enough to just have it be an AU where the guy just doesn’t like the girl that way, we have to derail her characterization completely out of spite. Your joke seems right out of that era, considering the whole thing is responding to “Yet another female protagonist reduced to a mere love interest” with “lol good, cuz I’m a slash fan”. Time, place, and situation are important when making good jokes.
