Why is it that multiple Chinese celebrities have done something in front of some Japanese iconography that specifically harkens back to a dark time for their own country? Like, these celebrities didn’t just go to Japan, or get anime memorabilia, they pose(intentionally or otherwise, but it’s seemingly intentional) in front of a specific shrine or flag.

I don’t get it.

I don't know if this applies to this particular celebrity, but I've been to the shrine in question (Yasukuni Jinja) and you wouldn't know which particular shrine it is unless you were on the right side to see the steel torii and also knew what that meant. Plus it's right next to a really pretty park where a lot of people get wedding photos done.

Good point, I hadn’t been aware of that. Probably should have done more research, considering I’ve never been to Yasukuni Jinja, or really most of Tokyo.

I would guess that there are some portions of the populace who would just like to... move on. Not brood over old wounds. Etc.

Which I would understand, and think is a healthy attitude. It just doesn’t seem like that’s a widespread thought in China, or more likely it’s not something powerful people in China like the government agree with. So I actually meant why do they keep doing things like this and potentially risking their careers, which it apparently does? Not why would they personally want to do this, or why they would want to broaden their horizons and let go of a dark history that didn’t personally involve them. Because I get that, especially when you put it the way you did.
