Re: What were your fav childhood book genres?
(Anonymous) 2022-05-14 02:56 am (UTC)(link)Historical fiction in which a BIPOC girl is the lead. I was assigned a lot of these books (I assume because I was one of the very few POC students in my class), but I always loved them. I read one where a mute Indigenous girl must go on a walkabout of sorts on her own after messing up during a public event (basically she got shunned out of the tribe but if she was able to survive on her own and return alive, she'd paid for her mistake and be allowed back into the tribe). She was a badass. I read another one where there were two leads: one 12yo slave who was escaping up North and the other was also 12yo but she was born in the North and from a fairly affluent Black family. The girl raised up North is on her first mission on the Underground to help the slave girl escape to Canada. That book was so good! Or at least 11-12yo me thought so. And YES I read some of the American Girls books! I don't think I read them all though.
Any and all iterations of the Greek gods/mythology. We didn't study Romans as much (which adult me is a little disappointed by because in my early 20s I developed a fascination with ancient Rome after becoming a huge fan of HBO's 'Rome'; it would have been so much fun to learn about the Roman gods as a kid and compare it more with the Greek gods). Oh shit, I guess this is covered in my "folklore tales" section.
I recall reading a lot of the Sweet Valley Twins books and the Baby-Sitters' Club books.
Horror. I loved RL Stine's Fear Street book series. I liked the Goosebumps books, especially the Choose Your Own Adventure ones. But I was SO into Christopher Pike novels. When I discovered his books, I couldn't get enough of them. One of the stories that stuck with me the most was where we followed the serial killer of the story as the best friend (I think) of one of the murder victims goes with him to try to find out who the killer is because she doesn't know that he is the killer. There were probably other teen horror authors whose books I read but my favorite by a mile was Christopher Pike, and then distant second is RL Stine. Everyone intimidated me away from Stephen King so I didn't read his books until after high school.
