I like weighty fiction, but I hate "pizza cutter" stuff (all edge, no point--thank you to the F!S person who taught me that term). And managing to be the former without tipping into the latter is pretty much always a balancing act, IMO.

I do wish there were more smartly-written cheerful/optimistic TV shows, though. There definitely are some, and the ones that exist are absolute gems that I will cherish always, but they're not particularly common IMO.

I tend to feel like TV forces me to choose between dumb, fun content and smart, heavy content--and 95% of the time I just cannot turn my brain off enough to enjoy dumb stuff, so I end up defaulting to the smart, heavy stuff. That's not a brag. I know plenty of people smarter than me who enjoy fluffy escapism that I can't get into because for me it pings as dumb. It's just a matter of personal taste.

Ikr?
I want to enjoy light things, but my brain needs some salt for them to be enjoyable. Comedies are at their best when they have things to say
