But the point is that people already have "something" in their life that challenges them--many, many, many "somethings" in most people's cases nowadays. Turning on the news in itself is challenging--in my country, we've had 3 mass shootings in the past 2 days. It's not difficult for me to see why many people would want to watch "fluff" at the end of the day when the rest of their day had forced them to confront countless atrocities largely beyond their control.

You said it yourself--challenging ideas don't need to come from their entertainment media. They could come from that person's actual reality and surroundings. Frankly, many people don't have much time to spare for entertainment, so I don't judge them for using their moments of possible escape to do exactly that.

If these people were instead concerned about how the constant negativity and misery in the world has sapped people of their energy to engage meaningfully in society to tackle these very issues, I would agree. Instead, they focus on this idea that the individual has a moral deficit for wanting some happiness in their life.

I do agree that there's an overall problem in conflating depth with darkness.
