they come from gendered species, so seems legit.

Are you serious right now?

ayrt
yes?

OK - well, in that case, why do you think that alien species have to have the same gender identity as human beings? Just because they have a concept of gender, how does that lead to the conclusion that their gender identity functions in precisely the same way as that of human beings? I mean, there's a huge broad history of alien species in SFF where their gender doesn't work in the same way as it does for humans.

I've watched DW since Third Doctor and also listened to audiobook. Firstly, they have f mother and a father. Secondly, appearance. Third, pronounces. It was never in the lore that Time Lords are these alien species that have genders different from Earth.

It's something that wasn't indicated in the lore before, and now it is indicated in the lore. That's something that happens in Doctor Who, constantly, all the time. There were no such thing as Time Lords, until there was. The Doctor couldn't regenerate, until the first Doctor did. The Doctor could regenerate an unlimited number of times, until there was a limit on the number of times he could regenerate. Etc, etc, etc. If you want to say that the show shouldn't change its lore - to me, that's always seemed like it's a pretty silly opinion to have, especially about a show like Doctor Who where so much of the lore is just made up on the spot. There have been so many other changes to the lore before this, so why draw the line here? And tbh this change is relatively less dramatic than others in the past, where things have directly contradicted previous canon, whereas in this case it's something that was never explicitly said.

So then the question comes down to, is there a reason to object to *this specific* development in the lore? Well, the reason given here is "gendered species can't have their gender identity change over time". And that's definitely not a good reason, for several reasons, one of which is: it's a completely absurd thing to say about a science fictional race. It's also probably a bad reason to object to the change in the lore for other reasons, but that on its own would be enough.

DA

Yeah, it seems like BS to apply human gender understanding to Time Lords, completely different race with different understanding of gender and time.

I hated some other lore changes. I just skipped the episodes and ignored them. TARDIS turned human, Missy, Doctor/comapnion romance, War Doctor.

What are other reasons?
Also fictional world rules are based on author's word and the world's logic. Even alien species. Could you suspend your disbelief reading about pansexual short lived elves in LotR sequel?

I mean that is fair, but in a show as long-running as this, there's bound to be lore changes or stuff (some) fans don't like. I don't think your elf comparison is really on the same level (well, I think they could be pansexual to be honest, but the long-lived in fairly well established, so it would be more than a cosmetic change).

What about the looms?

No opinion. I read a lot of Eight fics so I'm for half human theory.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-21 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
DA always hated the half-human thing.
