That's a pretty tricky situation. It's understandable that you don't want to drag up your history with this person, especially in this situation. Would you be comfortable telling your friend that you care about them and how they're feeling but you don't feel able to talk to them about it because it reminds you of something you're dealing with that you'd prefer to keep private?

I finally settled on just being honest and telling my friend that I really wasn't comfortable talking about this subject because some past not-so great experiences meant I couldn't be the sympathetic ear she was looking for right now. I feel a little bad, but it wouldn't be right to force myself to listen and try to be sympathetic when I really just couldn't. And also I felt like I owed it to her to let her know that I probably wasn't ever going to be up for talking about this particular subject, either. Like I said, I just want to let it all be in the past and forget about it.
