There was an article in the Atlantic just this week about anti-fan culture.

"Why the Internet Hates Amber Heard"
https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2022/05/modern-celebrity-fandom-johnny-depp-amber-heard-trial/629887/

Anyway, personally I've found the trial to be fascinating, like... there comes a point in America where all you hear 24/7 is (hidden for potentially disturbing headline material)war in Ukraine and wildfire and planetary ecological annihilation and gun violence and mass murder of children and abortion rights flying right out the window like poof and meanwhile you watch your grocery bill go up $20 a month and your gas go up $.25 a week and by the way you also just lived through a 2+-year plague and at that point maybe you just wanna watch two celebrities air all the dirty laundry of their toxic relationship because it's free entertainment and you're just. You're so tired of having to care so much about every goddamn important thing. All. The. Time.

But this is precisely the point.

It is a trial about a real-life romantic relationship that was, by any reasonable account, abusive at least in some form.

How the fuck is this the thing you turn to when you are escaping the bad news. The Heard-Depp trial is exactly the same kind of thing as all the other pieces of real-life awful news that we go to fiction to escape. To view it as a piece of escapism, you have to completely ignore everything about it.

All of this.

Yeah this exactly. I'm not being preachy and moralizing by avoiding it; I'm avoiding it because it's awful and my brain is already marinating in awful.

I mean if I wanted to escape from reality by watching depressing shit (I don't, I read fluffy fantasy) I'd still stick to fiction.

+1000

This case being tuned into as entertainment, and memefied all over the place, is extremely disturbing to me.

This.

It isn't fun, it's more horrible shit going on in the world. If I want true escapism I'm going to go watch a TV show instead because THAT is 100% fake.

AYRT

To view it as a piece of escapism, you have to completely ignore everything about it.

Well no, you only have to ignore the fact that these are real human beings, and that's precisely what is occurring on a mass societal level. It's gladiatorial. There are reasons people gathered en masse in ancient Rome to watch real humans commit violent atrocities as a spectacle. (1) These people were very angry about the state of their lives. (2) They saw the "performers" as others, so they were able to disconnect any empathy from what they were watching and use the spectacle as a release valve for their anger.

I wasn't trying to justify this suspension of empathy, and the online response against Amber Heard is indeed extremely disturbing, but I'm personally not going to fault the average person tuning in. These two people are suing each other for millions of dollars. Millions. It is hard for the average person to fathom a million dollars. The average person has heard sordid details about toxic interactions that occurred on a private plane, a private freaking island, a honeymoon trip on the orient express, etc etc, and it becomes easy for them to view the parties involved as others, not human - and, I would add, part of a privileged class that seemingly operates outside the rules of society while often using their public platform to preach to the lesser sheep. There's also an overarching nihilistic sentiment to the public interest and response that I would say encapsulates the general mood of the public at the moment, perhaps in a way not seen since WW2. People have sunk to this level because reality is that bad.

I share the secret-maker's distaste for the holier-than-thou attitude of those looking down their nose at the audience of this spectacle, although the comparison to fandom antis kind of makes me think it's a troll secret.

“There's also an overarching nihilistic sentiment to the public interest and response that I would say encapsulates the general mood of the public at the moment, perhaps in a way not seen since WW2.”

I think that’s going a little bit too far to compare it to WW2. If I’m being honest, that comparison actually makes the one OP made in their secret seem way more understandable, even if I don’t agree with it.

I don’t agree with looking down on the people watching the spectacle of this trial either, despite wanting nothing to do with it.

But while there’s certainly nihilism aplenty that may encapsulate public mood to a degree, it really doesn’t compare to a literal war. Especially a literal war that contained The Holocaust.

As an aside, even if OP did make this secret for troll reasons, they seem perfectly reasonable and non-inflammatory about it.
