I can't stand seeing my reflection in the screen either, although for me it has less to do with self-consciousness and more to do with it being incredibly distracting.

Have you considered getting a slip-on privacy screen? When my almost a decade-old laptop died recently and I had to replace it with a much more reflective newer model, that's what worked for me. Even against a fully black screen, the most that's visible is a blurry smudge of light and shadow.

I feel the same way a lot. It especially happens when I'm playing my DS, right after I turn of the game or if it goes black to load... I usually look away. It's so awkward.

Don't get so down on yourself, OP. People all have their own ways to kick back. You're no better or worse than someone who has to be around people, any people, in order to relax and uses their relationships in order to distract themselves from their own lives.

And trust me - everybody's a loser in some aspect of their lives.
