The thing is that the aesthetic is absolutely all the movie has going for it. And while it's a nice aesthetic, it's not nice enough, or well-done enough, or gorgeous enough, to carry an entire movie that has very little else going on.

This. I feel the same way about this movie I do about Avatar. Sure, its pretty, but that's it.

TBH I think even Avatar had more going on in it than Sky Captain. And that's saying something.

Related, I read that Avatar is finally (and that's saying it lightly) getting a sequel, and several of them??? Why?? Who asked for this?? I know I didn't.

I had a good time watching Avatar in the theater and I anticipate that I will have exactly as good a time watching every single one of the sequels in the theater

It would have worked better as a series of half hour drama shorts. Just like the old pulp serials it was homaging.
