So I've recently gotten super into a new ship and am shipping it harder than I think I've ever shipped anything. Unfortunately it's a super small fandom and there's only a handful of fics. Of that handful, there are only a couple that actually appealed to me, all the others included kinks that I'm not into.

But eventually I got desperate enough to read those, too, and now I'm feeling...frustrated, and kind of annoyed. I still found some bits to enjoy in those fics and the kinky stuff wasn't *quite* as unappealing as I'd expected (although still not my thing), but I really wish there was more that are my kinda vibe.

The good thing is that my ship seems to be popular (all the fics that exist are for them) so I guess I just need to hope the fandom gets bigger. (I know the advice always given in this situation is to write stuff yourself, but I can't write at all, and there are reasons I'd feel weird about attempting it.)

Yep. Not the tiniest fandom I've ever been in, but I can't read japanese... so, yeah.

I did and I regreted it. It wasn' all small fandoms, just the ones I read all my ship fics in. Large fandom, smll fandom, tere's never enough fic.

I feel your pain, OP.

If you're not comfortable writing fics, might starting a prompt meme or a small fandom exchange be something you'd be interested in? They're still work (and I don't know where your spoons are at) but they can help gather like-minded writers together.

Yup, and it's usually unsatisfying. Like going on vacation, but the airline loses your luggage and the event you were going to see was canceled due to freezing rain.

Yeah, exactly. I skimmed over those parts, and there were a couple cute character moments in between, but I was still ultimately disappointed.

All the time. Unfortunately, sometimes I’m so not into the kinks that I can’t even finish reading. So even though I already wasn’t enjoying it, I still feel bad that I can’t read the entirety of the few fics for my ship or overall fandom. I know that sounds silly, but it’s how I feel.

No, I totally get it! Luckily these weren't too bad and I was able to skim over those parts and still get *some* enjoyment out of the fics, but it was overall unsatisfying, and...yeah. I love this ship so much that part of me wants to read everything there is, but I'm not sure I'm going to bother with fics that are unappealing to me in the future (assuming there are more eventually!)

Yep. And I'm not saying this as advice, as per the last sentence in your comment - just for me, it always makes me so frustrated I wind up writing something myself that is to my tastes. :P I know that's not helpful in your case though, sorry I can't offer anything useful, just sympathizing.

Haha, no, I get it. Aside from thinking I'm awful at writing, I've always felt weird about writing fic because there are weirdos out there who like to send it to the actors and stuff, but I might have to just get over my hesitation and write something and just not post it anywhere.

Oyyyyy, that's an angle I hadn't thought of - almost all my fandoms are video games or anime/manga, so there are no actors and the creators aren't likely to see stuff I'm writing in English. I'd forgotten that sort of thing happens sometimes. :P

And if you think you're awful at writing, that means that you have something in common with like 90% of authors, probably. ;) (The thinking - not the actually being awful.)

But yeah, if you write and don't post, at least you can go back to it later and have something that is EXACTLY to your preferences, which is nice. (Also if it's not exactly to your preferences anymore, you can just edit it so that it is. :D)

Yeaaaah. I even made secret about tiny fandom recently. I do not read all fics though, I know when I am going to REALLY regret my choices.

Unfortunately, yes. If I can skim around the kink, I'll still read it but if it's too integrated then I have to nope out.

I'm asexual, so that's a yes :p

Big time! Fuck, I've been just about scarred for life after misunderstanding/misreading/I DIDN'T THINK THEY ACTUALLY MEANT IT!!!... uh, a tag, and- well, nope! They definitely fucking meant it that's for sure;;;;

Other times I'll just be like /very/ bored or mildy debating if this is OOC enough yet to exit out of already, especially if the fic is more pw(ith)p than pw(out)p. Since I'm not a fan of smut whatsoever.
So technically every fic I read with kinks is one I read despite me not being into them, lol. (the one mentioned above notwithstanding;;;;)
