interesting, I compared the first page of the fanyiyi translation to the Seven Seas one and I think the Seven Seas one reads a little more easily. But then for those of us who actually NEED a translation I don't buy into the horror and rage of a missing line here or there.

All translations will have their good and bad points and getting hung up over a few phrases seems to me just another way for people to humble!brag about how THEY don't need a translation since they have the luxury of being so critical of EVERY translation released, fan or otherwise.

I didn't mind the 7Seas one, really, it just reads as poorly edited and, once we learned about the working conditions it was easy to blame it on how rushed and unsupported the translators were. Fanyiyi's was much easier/more natural for me to read when I was new to the fandom and didn't understand a lot of the context/tropes of the genre, and she took a lot of time with her footnotes to explain things. I haven't reread it since the 7Seas one came out, except to check those deleted lines and a few of the more awkward phrasings to help me figure out what was being expressed.

Some people we upset about 7S choosing to give the "common people" regional English dialects (using "ain't" and "good ol'" and "laddie") but I liked that they were making an attempt to show a difference that I assume was in the original, and also liked that 7S kept the original terms of familial address (shidi, gege, jiujiu, etc) except in the second volume they... stopped? doing that? partway through? and started with "uncle/little uncle" and some other weirdness which is why I would still like a fan edit, or at minimum to still be able to refer to multiple fan translations to compare/contrast the choices different people made and their reasoning.
