Wow I was also today years old. Plus I used to watch this movie with my parents and they never explained this to me, and they would always explain details like that in movies that we watched if they thought it might go over my head. So yeah, if that's what they were going for I don't think many people make the connection now. But I guess more would have at the time it was written.

I guess I don't get it. How is the age gap between her and her brother have anything to do with someone she was nice to?

If it was her mother or father who got this 'suspicious' inheritance, and there as a big age gap, sure, but why her? I haven't watched this movie in ages, so i don't remember one single thing about it, quite honestly.
