I RP smut for the same reason I RP in general: to laugh, squee, read/create something entertaining. And yeah, things get "omg that is so hawt!" sometimes, but I guess I'm good at compartmentalizing my character's feelings from from my own? That's why I cackle evilly whenever I do something truly evil/heartbreaking to a character (e.g., Vic Sage offering a cigarette to some chick he meets in the future named Renee or something).

Can't speak for everyone, though. We all do things for our own reasons.

Dittoing this. The only time rping smut felt "Too close" was when I was doing some lesbian smut (Or with skeevey people who can't draw the IC/OOC line)

I haven't actually gotten to RP lesbian smut yet, but knowing me I'd just be all "bwahaha this is awesome I actually have inside information on how these body parts work".

Also haven't gotten to RP with the skeevs yet, but there but for the grace of god.

I don't doubt that a lot of people do smut RP just casually for fun. For me personally, I find it incredibly boring unless I'm in a mood to get off on it. Unless it's basically like interactive text-based porn, I'd much rather have my characters go kill monsters or something.

Posting anonymously because I'm pretty sure all three of my regular smut-RP partners read this comm and I don't want them to get skeezed out by this. :P

I only do smut RP with my SO, and... honestly, the smut nearly always takes a backseat to the leading-up and the plot and creating interesting situations. Sometimes we just do a fade-to-black and deal with the fallout afterwards, because it's just plain more interesting.

I don't RP smut because I find it a bit tedious. Also, I'm not sure if the characters I play would be great Don Juans, and I'm not sure my RP partners would appreciate the equivalent to "I put on my robe and wizard hat."

Plus my first RP partner was a few years younger than me while I was 17, and no way in hell I was going to write smut with her. So I got into the habit of fading to black.

Frankly, I only write smut with people I know IRL and am extremely good friends with, so it's not like there's a line there to be crossed in the first place, you know? But I kind of understand where you're coming from. IMHO, porn is porn (and yeah, I am one of those weird people who claims there's a difference between porn and erotica, but screw it, it's fandom), and if you get off on it, go for it. Just don't sticky up the keyboard jerking it while you're trying to type, y'know?

Usually, we only play out smut that actually has a plot, or fits into the grander plot we have for our characters, both fandom and OC. It's almost never PWP, though when it is...hell, it's usually because we're just in the mood for pointless smut and we're both horny, frankly. XD And there's nothing wrong with that.

Oh, and FTR, me and all my friends are girls, and with very few exceptions, we play guys. The only time it has gotten 'too close' with me is when I was RPing a het OC pairing with my buddy...and there's mutual attraction between us to start. ^^;

TL;DR, don't analyse it too much. Write what you like, don't worry about what the other person is doing. You'll get too squicked to move if you think about it too much. ^_~

115. I...can't really think of any reason for smut RP besides getting off, besides perhaps amusement. Why would it happen so much if no one got off on it? That's silly.

I used to RP male/male smut because it wasn't arousing, so I could enjoy it as part of the plot. (I'm female) I could concentrate more on being IC than on just doing stuff because it was hot.

But with my current GF when we RP male/male smut I get off on it for the first time since I stayed RPing it many years ago. It's really kind of odd, but I like it.

What's to second-guess? I always thought it was porn, period, so the motives are sexual, or at least related to an interest in sexuality if not wank-related.

I think rather than just being a tool to get off, it's a tool for a person's sexual exploration, particularly for girls. By playing a character who is not themselves, and not even often of their gender, they have more freedom to explore sexual roles and behaviours that they may never get the opportunity to in reality, due to social conventions and personal boundaries among other things. Role-playing allows someone to experience some of the thrills of exciting sexual interactions without having to make themselves vulnerable in real life.

And most of all, it's fun. It's interesting to play out different kinds of characters in types of relationships that you may not necessarily desire for yourself. For example, some like the idea of casual sex and one-night stands, but may not possess the confidence or ability to actually go out and have one. Or they even just might not want to, since it may violate their own personal set of principles. Who knows? But role-play allows them to explore this kind of interaction without having to put oneself at risk.

IAWTC. Though I have to say I don't think the statement of 'nobody gets off on RP smut' in the secret is true. It's never been my goal but I can't say it's never happened.

Oh totally. It can happen sometimes if it's just that good, but that's not to say that it can't also fulfill other purposes besides being glorified porn.

Oh of course. It's why there's a difference between RP smut and cybersex. They're just not the same thing.

This is the best analysis of this that I've heard so far--rings truest for me, at least. I don't think I've ever RP'd smut on LJ (though I've done romance and intense arguments between exes and suchlike), but if I did that'd be what was going on. I mean, nothing wrong with getting off on it, yay porn--but there's definitely a place for RP as exploration. Just like there's a place for literature in general as exploration, come to think of it. Only with RP, you have both the control of writing the story yourself, and immediate feedback from your RP partner.

Oh, I am so with you right now. I've literally only just joined an RP game and although I don't intend to RP smut with my particular character (he's engaged to a character not in the RP, and it'd be OOC for him to go sleeping around), it's been making me wonder.

One side of me thinks, well, it's like collaborative fic-writing, really. Sex is a good tool for exploring characterisation, especially when it comes to to interactions with other people. It can be fascinating to read and write even when - often especially when - it's not just done as fap material.

The other side of me thinks that I wouldn't have phone sex with RL buddies, even taking on a fake persona, so it feels just weird to be having a kind of cybersex with online acquaintances. Just that little bit too personal for my tastes, though I've got no problem with other people doing it. Live and let live, y'know.

(Also - the character I RP, and most of the ones I've thought about RPing in future, are canonically very heterosexual. I'm queer. The idea of being a gay guy RPing straight sex in an RP fell of straight girls RPing gay sex just amuses me too much. Also I really don't know enough about how women's bodies work to make it convincing.)

Little of column A and a little of column B on this end.

I play smut sometimes. Depending on my mood, it can be tedious, very gripping (like an action scene, or the payoff in a formula detective show), or hot. I usually play M/M; it's easier to disassociate, and then it is more like collaborative fic writing. Writing het or F/F, now, that's harder and tends to be more personal. But still a collaborative fic effort, one way or another-- I don't feel like I'm having sex with the person on the other end of the line.

(Bonus points if you take the woman's part and a female writing partner takes the guy's part. You can be vague and euphemistic about your chars bits together!)

I've never RPed smut myself. But two of my RP friends do. And I read it. And sometimes it's hot. And once it was so hot I got fapping to it.

I was interrupted by something else before I came, but still. Would they be creeped out by that? Probably not, tbh: we're all grownups, and we all know what porn is for.

I guess I'm 50/50, I've only gotten off on a couple of RPs I've done. Both were male/male (I'm a bi female) and one was with the person I'm currently involved with. (the fact that I got off on our RPs made it clear we jived sexually!)

I too am sort of bothered by the casual nature of it. I've since quit RPing with anyone but my SO... When I was doing the RP thing emotions did get pretty intense, so I think there was at least SOME attraction or feeling involved at some point. I got sick of seeing everyone fucking everyone else in our little circle, it got to be where that's all people did.

That's a good question. I do it for fun, and lol hot, and because I can't get enough of my pairing having sex or..well just being together xD But I'm sure there's some who see it as more or...less...*That made sense!*

115. Most people who rp don't do it strictly for smut, no. They create characters who interact and sometimes those relationships evolve into sexual ones. Some people write that out, others don't. The ones that do don't always do it to get off. It's more of a natural and organic part of character development.

That said, there are those who do it just to get off. I don't think it implies anything more about them than enjoying any other form of pornography.

I've gotten off to rp smut before, just not the stuff I do myself, because... it would make me feel a bit bigheaded I guess, haha.
